Brake Drums

Does anyone know where to source new brake drums for a 1967 K20? I need the front drums for a dana 44 closed knuckle axle. I ended up deciding to go back to the original closed knuckle axle vs. an open knuckle disc swap. I ultimately decided that originality is more important to me for my restoration. I had the drums turned, but it would appear that one of them is warped. I can't believe that the shop went ahead and turned it even though it had a wobble, but they did anyway. Rock Auto doesn't seem to have the front drums and I am not sure where to look.

Thanks, Clay

Re: Brake Drums

Aside from regular auto part stores, check junk yards in your area. Roll of the dice to find ones still with enough meat to turn but was what my friend finally had to do with his 67 and he was successful.

Rockauto would have been my first look as you did. Got my C10 rears from them.

Re: Brake Drums

I wonder if you would have any success getting at least 1 used drum in worn condition but not warped by posting a want-to-buy ad here in the forum. People on this forum have stashes. Then send your drums to get relined. It would be a bit expensive, but probably won't have to do it often unless you drive it a whole lot. From what I read on the www, J&G Brake Drum Relining is the company that does this sort of thing. I don't have experience with them, but I did have my proportioning valve rebuilt at what I thought was high $$$ by White Post Restoration and thought it was worth it.

Re: Brake Drums

Did you post a want to buy ad?

The Hollander interchange number is 530-961 for 65 to 69 20 series 4x4 front drums.

The drum and hub number is 530-1148 for the same years.

Those numbers also fit 67-69 GMC 2500.

Maybe those numbers will help you. The numbers are from my Hollander Classic IV book.

Re: Brake Drums

I will post a wanted ad. I was hoping to find a new replacement, but I don't think that will be happening. I will also try a search for the hollander numbers.

I didn't know that a brake drum could even be relined. I will have to do some more research into that as well.

Re: Brake Drums

I used the same ones listed for the rears for my '69 D44 closed-knuckle. No discernible difference that I could find.

Unfortunately, mine is a K20 so the front and the rear drums are different from each other.
