I've been thinking it's more like:

68-69: V-SIX or V-EIGHT regardless of trim level
70-71: Blank for In-line six (V6 discontinued on light duty), or V-EIGHT, and still regardless of trim level
71.5 (maybe) and 72: GMC switches to trim level callouts on fender badge
