If you are beating the drum with a sledge hammer and its a 1/2 ton rear there is nothing else that can be holding it on. Get access to the adjuster from the back adjust it all the way in, spray the drum around the centering hub with WD-40 or PB blaster or something like that give it a few good wacks with the 10 lb sledge and it should pop right off

I have not gotten it to move at all on the center hub. I have not messed with it sense the other night, but I will give it a try and see what happens. There is not much break pad on it, even with the parking break tight as hell I can still rotate the tire one handed.

Re: 80 Chevy k10 build

I got the truck tagged for a whole $90, cant beat that.

The rear drum would not come off, we had to apply heat to it and then hit it with the sledge hammer.

Yesterday my dad and I went down there, got the rear drum off, and then we started taking the front wheels off so we could check the breaks on them. Well I ended up breaking two lug bolts before we decided that we better use the impact wrench. After doing that and looking at the rotors on the front, We thought that it would be better just to fix up the 3/4 ton axles and put them under the truck till I get the lift kit and tires next summer. We got to looking at parts and they where not that bad, so we went ahead and fixed the breaks and replaced one of the front rotors. We had to heat the rear drum up again to get it loose, im not sure what is happening, but we sanded all of the mating surfaces hoping that it wont stick anymore. When I was putting on the passenger front tire I noticed that I could push the tire around, the bottom ball joint is bad on the front axle. So we have to fix that before I put it on the highway.

Before we did do the breaks, we where able to drive it around and put a total of 3 miles on it driving it between my grandpas field and our field. Everything drive train seems to work fine.

I am not sure if I put the valve seals on wrong or not, but I think i am still burning oil.

Re: 80 Chevy k10 build

I haven't really done much with this thing lately. I was leaking oil out of the front main because I had a groove in the balance pulley, so I fixed that and replaced the front main seal again and I think it is still leaking. I also went ahead and put the bed back on it so I could at least use it as a truck.

For now everything is on hold as I picked up a 85 crew cab that I want to make into a nice daily driver, so this old beater/hunting truck is going to be put on hold. I need to pull the engine because I was in such a hurry to just get it running and I didn't see if the rings needed replaced so I am planning on doing a full rebuild on the engine sometime in the near future.

The plans haven't changed much, but I dont think it will be getting the dents pulled, nor painted, I found out its to fun to run around out in the fields and stuff in and I dont want to paint it just to mess up the paint. So it will now be more of a working around the farm/hunting truck.

Re: 80 Chevy k10 build

So I have been using the truck to drive to and from working on my crew cab, so far things seem to be working fine with it.

The alternator went out the other day when my dad and I went to go get a deer that he shot. I got it replaced today and works great now.

I have noticed that i have not put a picture of it up for a while, so here is what it looks like for now.

Re: 80 Chevy k10 build

Nothing new, been driving it while I build my crew cab. Right now it's battery less as I have the battery in my crew cab. Not sure what is going to happen with this truck.

Re: 80 Chevy k10 build

Well this trucks plans are changing. My crew cab had a little fire so I'm tearing it down for the cummins swap and putting the 6.2/sm464/205 into this truck from the crew cab. I'm starting the tear down this weekend and hope to have it running soon with the 6.2. The reason I'm pulling the 350 out is because it just doesn't run as good as it should and it needs rebuilt and the 6.2 works great and I seem to want to convert all my stuff to diesel and manuals

Re: 80 Chevy k10 build

Right now it is going under an axle swap. Had the front axle over heat and blew up a bearing and I had some 8 lug axles and some 33 inch tall tires around so I am swapping everything. I guess I could update this thread again soon. Have not updated it sense I put my 6.2/sm465 in the truck.
