Project Charity Case - Page 5 - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Here is the agenda:

This year:
-Buff the paint
-Purchase and install hidden receiver hitch
-Install power brake booster (I already have the parts)
-Purchase and install 6" drop springs (maybe)
-Drive, use, and repeat

Long Term:
-Install dual exhaust
-Replace inner and outer rockers and lower fenders
-Do something with the rust inside the bed (remove rust and add Rhino lining?)

Sounds like a good plan. especially the Drive, Use, and Repeat part. I'm actually looking for a longbed now for myself in hopefully similar shape with nice patina to use as a driver/work truck.

I would ask, "why didn't you just keep the truck you sold to me? If you would have spent the same amount of time on it that you spent on your longbed, you would have a shop truck by now!". However, I really don't feel that way, because it would mean that I would not have been able to enjoy the truck!

Good luck finding a longbed truck. If you see anything in the Raleigh area that you need me to look at and take pictures of, please let me know. I recently switched jobs and have more flexibility in my schedule.

Yep, should have kept it but I'm glad you've gotten it and enjoyed it and done such a good job restoring it while keeping its character.

My longbed is now a shortbed that I'll be selling when complete...can you tell that I change my mind a lot with vehicles

I like that you've had a plan and worked through it to get a great truck out of it.

Not sure how I missed the pictures last week but glad I checked in your build. The Dizzy looks right at home there. Glad to hear its running better too. Sure wish I was that far along. Progress on ours has come to a grinding halt. Hope to get back on it soon. You have a nice plan to get done this year. Keep the pics coming!

the truck looks great...you want to sell those wheels and tires?

I actually did that on the hood. I may have to do it on other parts of the truck before I buff it out. Check it out:

Thanks Jonathan. I have been following your build closely. You get more work done in a week than what I get accomplished in a month, so you are allowed to change your mind every once in awhile!

Thanks again for the dizzy. I think I will keep the wheels for now. I know they are as common as belly buttons, but I still like them.

Oh yeah... I can see it now; that turned out nice! I vote to continue with that method on the rest of the truck. Are you hoping to bring more of a 'shine' to the rest of the original paint by buffing it?

I don't necessarily want it to shine, but there are some "chalky" stains on the side of the truck that I would like to get rid of. I've buffed one spot on the bed and it revived the paint pretty good.

Calcium Lime Rust. It is the cleaner you can buy in most grocery stores. It is intended for home use, but some people have discovered that mixing it with warm water and gently applying it with a scotchbrite pad to old cars will remove surface rust. Of course, once this is done, something needs to be placed on the paint to keep it from rusting again. I just used a good coat of wax on my hood.

I always screw it up, but I believe the truck plates have letters after the numbers....

EDIT: Just looked at a couple plates I talked to a guy about...NC Truck plates are "NUMBERS-Letters"....like this one

It was a beautiful day here in North Carolina, so my wife and I took the truck on a nice 25 mile drive. Halfway through the drive, I loaded the truck up with some dirt that I needed for some yard work. The extra weight dropped the back of the truck a little and I really like the stance. Here is a picture of the truck with the dirt in it:

I may have to look in to some 1" lowering blocks or a pair of 6" springs.

When I was loading the truck up with dirt, a guy stopped his newer Chevy truck at a stop sign, jumped out and ran over to me. He said, "HEY, do you want to sell that truck?". I laughed and told him no. He turned back around and cars were backed up behind his running truck that was still parked in the middle of the road. He took off running for his truck, jumped in and drove off. It was pretty funny.

Here is another shot of the truck that I like. I need to start buffing the stains out of the paint:

Love the truck. And The Service Station is a pretty cool idea. Have you thought about doing Service Station signage on the doors, shop-truck style? That would be pretty cool.

And I had to laugh when I saw your "loaded" pic...I did the same thing. I've got an itch to lower my truck some more, after seeing it with a bed full of snow this winter
