Any help would be appreciated. I am leaning towards just keeping what I have but it sounds fun looking for something else.
I'd go for it if it was me...I like the thrill of the hunt though With this economy and some patience you will likely find a truck with less rust for around 4K.

Re: PROJECT LOW DOUGH -1967 shortbed

I've found numerous trucks in the 4 grand rage around here that were pretty decent. They'll show up, you just have to play the waiting game, and be ready.. If there's no attachment to this truck, then i'd say sell it and get a true short bed, with less rust. Especially if you get to keep your trans, headers an intake.. Lots of deals where they jus don't have a trans/engine.

Thanks guys.. Any local guys want to chime in? I know they are out there but I am in the midwest. They are out here but most are rusty. Mine is rusty but not horrible. I just think I could be a little ahead by selling but I dont want to screw myself.. I am on the fence with it.

Re: PROJECT LOW DOUGH -1967 shortbed

Hey Brian..... I think you need to put a plan together of what your really after. If it has to be perfect and you don't want a shortend frame then you already have your answer. If you just need an original frame to go with what you have, they are out there. So it really boils down to what you want and how much work you can do yourself to make it affordable.

I have pieced together a truck before, its time consuming to find the parts you want in good shape. Heck I'm rebuilding mine right now and it sucks not to be able to enjoy it. So consider the fact you have a running truck and can enjoy it while you find parts and do minor fixes while utilizing your ride. Then save up and put in the hands of a pro to do the last finishing touchs when your ready.

The money can always come if you change your mind later. But you can't beat paid for now. It doen't cost you anything that you don't want to spend on it.

Just my $.02.

Bike looks good. You need to swing by the house and show it off.

Have a safe holiday.

I am leaning towards keeping this one mainly because I want to learn with tis truck. I guess if I mess this one up i wont cry over it. If it was an all original no rust truck then I might cry some. Anyway I did swing by the other day but you had a monster boat in your drive way and a bunch of people over so I didnt stop. I live a little closer to you now so I will swing by sometime soon.. maybe in my truck. (-:

I just have a feeling I will regret selling this truck. I do think 4000 is a good price to get out of it but I guess I know all the bad about this truck. I buy a new one I might not know and end up with something worse. this one is close to being a really fun driver.

Re: PROJECT LOW DOUGH -1967 shortbed

Brian... this is a tough debate.

Being one that was in the same situation back in 2009, for me I looked at it this way... for what I gave for my '69, I couldn't have put that money back into my '72 and be anywhere near as complete as my '69 is. While I had located a truck before I decided to sell, your situation is different in that way. I've seen a lot of great looking trucks for sale lately with a wide range in prices, and as you know, the good deals are few and far between.

As mentioned previously... sit down and make a plan for your current truck and one you would purchase. Consider everything you would have to add to a 'new' truck to make it your own. If you will end up changing a lot to arrive at your desired style, stick with the current truck IMO. If you've seen trucks that are close to what you are wanting to accomplish then sell it and go for it.

$4k is an amazing offer I will add. Took a few months to sell my '72 after buying the '69 and was a lot of hassle until it was gone.

Shoot me an idea as to what you are looking for in a truck.

Good luck buddy!

Re: PROJECT LOW DOUGH -1967 shortbed

Well I have decided I am going to keep the truck. Its to close to being able to have fun in it. I am going out tonight to install the new trans pan and I also just ordered an adjustable track bar for the rear. I am hoping to start gathering more parts for my air ride soon. I am really itching to buy some boss 338's for it soon.. I am trying to hold off because i know i need other stuff right now.

Re: PROJECT LOW DOUGH -1967 shortbed

Well I got my trans pan on but realized that the reason its leaking is that one of the bolts is stripped that holds the pan on. I ordered a CPP trans crossmember so I can get rid of the original and I have more clearance for exhaust and to work. I plan to just helicoil the threads on that stripped boly and make sure my torque settings are right.

So I have a
CPP adjustable track bar on its way.
CPP trans crossmember on its way.
CPP bolt in C notch on its way.
and I might be buying some CPP motor mounts soon.

I hope to get some more pics and updates soon.. My goal is to make the midwest trucks nationals. I know my truck is a basket case but i would love to be able to drive it over there.

Re: PROJECT LOW DOUGH -1967 shortbed

I know but taking a picture of me laying under the truck is not all that cool. I will get some pics of the stuff installed. Once this thing is drivable I think my progress will triple. Right now it's a 30 mile trip one way to work on it.

Re: PROJECT LOW DOUGH -1967 shortbed

Well Here are some updated pictures.. I got my trans crossmember installed along with my new pan. Bad is that I spent 8 hours in the heat laying on gravel and my pan is still leaking. I am fed up and actually dropping it off at the trans shop tonight to have them mess with it. If its going to cost to much I am just going to have them install my 700r4. I also took some pictures of my new parts.. I have a ton more parts laying around just waiting to go on this truck. I plan to have my exahust ran above my trans crossmember when I do the headers. Anyway i will keep you guys updated when I hear back from the trans shop.

Well it was just the rubber gasket that came with the pan. I did not use any silicone or anything with it. just torqued to spec.

Re: PROJECT LOW DOUGH -1967 shortbed

Okay news..... The trans shop said I am actually missing 2nd gear in my th-350. I thought it was the modulator because the trans would shift directly into 2nd ... come to find out it is actually going 1 to 3rd. anyway a little bummed but it does explain why it felt so sluggish. The good news is that I am dropping off my 700r4 tomorrow afternoon and they are going to install it. I am excited that 1 it will have a good working transmission and 2 that it will be put in by someone that knows what they are doing. I hope to have this drivable sometime next week. I will keep everyone posted when i get it back.

Re: PROJECT LOW DOUGH -1967 shortbed

I painted my 700r4 last night and dropped it off at the trans shop this morning. They are starting to tear into her. They thought it would be next week sometime when its done. They are doing everything so it should be road worthly after this.. I am going to be going nuts for the next week or so waiting on it. I guess in the mean time i better make some room in my garage.

Re: PROJECT LOW DOUGH -1967 shortbed

I got some good news.. I picked up the truck yesterday evening and wow what a difference. Its so much nicer to drive. Another good thing is that I had the 9 inch tailshaft on my truck so I did not have to cut the driveshaft like I previous thought.. I guess I never put two and two together. The low end is alot better and the cruising highway speeds are great.. Having overdrive is nice. Now i just need to fix all the other crap in my truck.. gas guage mainly.. I noticed when I put on my turn signals my gas guage starts moving a little with the blinks.. I think its more of a ground/wiring issue rather than a sending unit issue. ANY IDEAS?
I hope to start getting some stuff installed on this soon.

Cool deal! I got really good mileage in a 1980Z28 I daily drove for a little over 2 years with a 350 engine and 700R4 w/ 373 gears. It had great low end feel and like you said...cruised nicely on the highway.

On the fuel gauge....definitely sounds like a bad ground. I'd add some ground straps or make sure they are tight and clean at the body (cab to frame), engine to frame, and bed to frame. Then make sure the dash cluster itself has a good ground.

The trans guy thought my rear end is a 373 too...
Quick question.. Do you know of a thread of pictures of where the ground straps are suppose to be on this truck. I assume I am missing all of them .

A quick search found this thread which is great with pictures...I just recommended it to be a FAQ so it's easier to find in the future...
