I just posted this, but................mine was painted with rustoleum 4 years ago......these are pictures when it was less than a year old........it could still be brought back to original condition with turtlewax now...........except for where it was not prepped good enough and I've got rust showing through............soon mine will get repainted with rustoleum again........but I would like to find a clear to spray over it....

Re: Painting my 69' GMC this weekend -Rustolium style

lookin good just remember if the red starts to look like crap..... turtlewax polishing compound and hardshell wax (i use paste) will bring it back every time.....I tried some other waxes, but turtlewax always looks the best...

it seams like everyone paints their rustoleum truck red, but I thought about repainting mine solid white with some red accents......white is a whole lot easier to take care of..........

I wonder what safety yellow looks like ???, on second thought it would not look good with red and white interior

Re: Painting my 69' GMC this weekend -Rustolium style

right before i painted i sanded the primmer coat with 320.
between coat two and three i used 600....... probably a little rougher than i should have done.
before i put down the 5th coat i will use 1000....maybe 1200

I can't wait to try this on mine. I had decided against red, but now I see how nice it looks. I may have to re- reconsider.

Plan on painting my 63 tomorrow with Rustoleum #777 Satin Black. It says to reduce 15% for spray gun.

8.5 parts paint to 1.5 parts reducer would be my guess.

A quart is 32 ozs. 15% of 32 is 4.8 ozs. A gallon is 128 ozs. 15% would be 19.2 ozs.

Re: Painting my 69' GMC this weekend -Rustolium style

This will be interesting to see the end results of this. I restored an old California license plate and used a Frazee oil based paint for the letters. The guy at the store told me that if you want the paint to flow correctly, I need to use a product called Penetrol. It eleminates brush strokes but also reduces oxidation. It came out real good but I noticed that it took about 72 hours to dry to the point that if I pressed hard on the surface it would not leave a finger print.

I wonder if the Acetone or Mineral spirit method would result in the same effect?

Mike

I spray all my chassis and suspension parts with Rustolium.
I use 15% Acetone, And clean the gun with paint thinner.
It's dry to the touch in about an hour, And completely dry in a day.
But you can use an enamel hardener if you wish.
In the picture below, I sprayed the A-arms gloss smoke gray,
The frame, Cross member, And spindle semi-gloss black.
The dust shield gloss silver. And the caliber was hit with a rattlecan,
Just to see if I liked the offset.

Re: Painting my 69' GMC this weekend -Rustolium style

Hummm...

A friend of mine asked me if I would paint his ElCamino once... I told him "Sure, I'll only charge you $200 for a single color shoot, over the costs of the materials, too". He coughed his coffee down at the price and told me he was thinking more along the lines of getting the whole job,(including materials), done for about $50 instead, and could I do it that for this price.
I said, "Sure but for $50 bucks I use Krylon Rattle Cans in whatever colors they offer... with a two day guarrantee, ...and I can do a Delux Paint Job for $25 bucks more using Rustoleum instead of the Krylon... with a two week guarrantee!

He simply put his coffee down and quitely walked out with everyone laughing. I think to this day his ElCamino is still rusting in the sun.

...

I've heard and seen pictures of people using Rustoleum on vehicles, one guy even did a darned fine job of it after color sanding after each coat and spraying 6 coats... out in his driveway,(using a sraygun, not rattlecans). A year later he did report how expensive all that car wax was just to keep a shine on the paint job. But it did look good from what I could see.

Here's one guy I found online that used this paint...
http://www.rickwrench.com/index79mas...llarpaint.html (ok, it did turn out kinda nice and he has even followed it up with updates through the years...

It sure could be done with Rustoleum, but I still think a good "Nason Urethane Single Stage" paint will do far better justice with half the time, trouble, work and give you far better results and a far longer lasting paint job... without costing you all that much more money!

Don't get me wrong here, Rustoleum is darned good paint... if your painting "Lawn Furnture".

IMHO

Michael

IMHO means "In My Humble Opinion"? Does the word humble come to mind when you re-read the above post?

It really is sad that there are members that feel the need to talk down to guys painting their cars with Rustoleum or anything other than conventional automotive paint finishing methods.

Some people don't have the equipment to spray a car with conventional equipment, nor do they have a spray gun or an adequate compressor. Nor do they have the money to buy said equipment or a place to use it. What they do have is a lot of time, a little money and the nerve to try something unconventional.

I say support the guy, help him if you can, but don't rag on him for doing something that has been proven to work, but doesn't meet you personal standards.

Re: Painting my 69' GMC this weekend -Rustolium style

Not real good pictures but mine was painted with a roller and rustolium 2 years ago. It has sat in the garage most of the time since then as it still has a few things to finish on it and life gets in the way sometimes. In these pictures it hadn't been wet sanded and buffed yet. It has as good a shine as any single stage paint I see. I have had many people see this truck and swear I am lying to them when I tell them how it was painted. Its not perfect or show quality but I could take it to any cruise in and not be ashamed of it and no one would guess how it was painted. It is a lot of work but the price is right. I used 2 quarts of royal blue and a quart of white. You need to thin the paint well and put it on thin by working the barely wet roller over an area till its smooth. If applied right there is very little orange peel and that leads to less sanding between every 2 coats. This is more work than spraying but if you don't have a compressor and gun and no where to spray then this can be done in the drive way cheap with good results.

Micheal

Keep in mind, This site caters to all levels. From the teenage busboy in school,
To the expert builders. It wasn't too many years back, When I was just out
of the service, Married, Two kids, And working construction. I painted my car
using spray can, Wet sanding, And hand buffing, Just to get a good paint job.
Sending my car to the bodyshop, Would have meant taking food off the table.
So don't sit on a high horse looking down. There are a lot of reasons to spray
Rustolium. Personally, For a cheap gloss coat, There are a lot or reasonable
priced single stage paints out there. But for a flat to semi-gloss, Rustolium
would be fine. But for people who don't have access to a sprayer, This is a
viable alternative. And a great conversation piece!
