LS1 air intake for a 67-72

I have gone through lots of build threads, but I cant seem to find what I'm looking for.

What air intake setups are you using in your 67-72? I've seen some real cheap ones on ebay for around $60-70, but its difficult to envision what is going to fit and what wont from pictures.

I think just a simple 90* coming out of the TB with a 6-7" pipe and cone filter would work best. Street and Performance also makes a square element that bolts right to the TB. Any downside to this?

Also, what size tubing are you using? I am using the OEM 98' LS1 TB and MAF

Thanks!

edit: I am using a '98 F body rad and e-fan setup

That is what I am using too. Not a 67-72 but for the price buy it and cut the angle part off if you don't like it. 69 bucks shipped.

Re: LS1 air intake for a 67-72

I started with a 90* silicone elbow and a K&N filter, both with a 4" inner diameter. What I have come to find out is that the MAF is slightly smaller outer diameter. I still need at piece of 4" pipe too.. I feel like I should have just bought a kit. I may save a few bucks in the end, but its a pain piecing it all together...

Re: LS1 air intake for a 67-72

That is why I got a kit again. I was way over 70 bucks for the parts I wanted to make the intake and was having to use a tiny air filter. The one in my pic was 69 shipped with everything.

Spectre makes one for an ls swap into a 69-72 truck. I'd show you pics of mine but I haven't installed it yet.

Ok now that i'm done being a smartass, I will answer your question. I would come off the TB with a 90* silicone elbow, 3.5 or 4" aluminum tube to the MAF (with silicone couplings on either side to connect to the tubing, then more tubing to your air filter location. Basically the same as mcmlxix mentioned.

FYI, since you're running a MAF (and not running Speed Density), you will not be able to come directly off the TB with a filter, unless you have room to sandwich the MAF in there.

I was MAFless on my jet boat, and did just the filter.

The monte carlo I built just had a quick and dirty intake on it. I have since put another 90 on the end to get the filter in front of the radiator to draw less warm air. I was seeing some pretty high IATs on hot days with it sucking under hood heat.

I'm a DIY guy, so I'd have a hard time paying someone to put something this simple together for me.

If you want to source the parts to do it yourself, I've had good luck with
www.siliconeintakes.com and www.racepartsolutions.com for finding silicone elbows, t-bolt clamps, aluminum tubing, air filters, etc.

That's pretty cool that they are developing a product for such a niche market.

Looks good. I guess I had been searching for K&N brand and getting those $$$ results. I'll probably just get that one in black though. Thanks!

That's what I'm thinking about. Any chance you could measure from the center of the tb to the the BASE of the filter for me?

I have two set up two different ways. The red one is 20-21 from filter base to middle of throttle body. The blue one is 23-24.

Ya one may be compressed more then the other. There is some adjustment that can be made. And the blue one has a different water pump so the hose will route different to the rad.
