Re: 55 project thread

been working on lots of stuff the last couple weeks including getting the bumper mounted, fiberglass kickpanels with speaker pods, fiberglass door panels, and a fiberglass console. I also picked up the rest of my paint and this thursday my new 3inch drop springs, new shocks and shackles will finally be in and ill go pick them up. Ive also been building up a computer specifically for the truck which will have gps capability, of course tons of hard drive space for music and videos and lots of other goodies. In the console I will mount a touch screen to control the pc, im not to worried about the noisy power inverter because well im pretty sure I wont hear much over the engine anyway right? I just hope it works as well on the road as it does off the road

im also working on fiberglass kickpanels with speaker pods, fiberglass door panels, and fiberglass console.

Re: 55 project thread

Your truck is coming along beautifully. I like the idea of having a computer on board with the GPS and stereo interfaced. I buddy of mine did that on his new 350Z. A built in "Ipod" if you will. Cool idea. Someone should start building them and marketing them. I see that as the next big thing in music. The CD/Cassette are a thing of the past.

Re: 55 project thread

I've been working on a carputer for my entertainment system also. I'm using a Panasonic Toughbook and will try to detach the touch screen and use it in a console. It's the way to go, have most of the software installed, just need a GPS reciever, a FM modulator and XM, I have wireless internet going since I already have a Verison wireless card which means I'll have internet all the time.

You paint in your driveway? In Riverside? whoa, from the pictures your nieghbors are close, how do you do it. We should get together some time, I'm in Fontucky. LOL.

if you are going through all that trouble, you should get a good head unit with an aux input, instead of using an fm modulator, if you plan on listening to music.

Re: 55 project thread

if the thouchbook has a mouse and tft exit you could use a seperate screen , i believe there was a 7 inch screen made by liliput that is a thouchscreen it has a tft and a ps2 plug on it .
that way you could keep the thouchpad in one piece .
i agree on having a normal headunit to use for a radio instead of a fm modulator , i've been visiting a carputerforum for a while and i've understood that while the modulator works ok when standing still it isnt working whell during driving .
last time i was on the forum they where building a special fm modulator to use in a car , i understood it had something to do with the frequency chainging a little when traveling

Re: 55 project thread

I have heard of a couple people doing this, and the 4 or 5 I heard back from the major problem was the systems worked fine in testing and theory and then as soon as it got out in harsh road conditions and the daily bumps, it went to **** quick. I HIGHLY recommend you find a way of mounting the system in a way which dampens normal suspension travel and bumps.

HAHA there's plenty of reading out there to design a nice 4 link, good F'in luck finding something on building a "suspension" for a stereo

You could be correct about the modulator and headunit but then that would take all the fun out of it. Just to clarify, I got this notebook for free, that is why I want to try it, and it's a touch screen with the tranlucent screen and it's 8.4" diagonal. So If I can find a way to detach it and make it work then I won't need another screen.

I hear what you're saying but I think that this notebook will work because it is a ruggedized notebook and is used in the service industries, the phone companies, police, and paramedics all use these notebooks so it must be able to hold up to some abuse.

Re: 55 project thread

Ummm-- ill pull her out and take some pics tomorow if I can. Maybe I should take some video of burnouts!

Yes my pops painted it out front, I actually live in Moreno Valley not Riverside so its not nearly as squeezed together as riverside is. Plus I live in a culdesac so its been fine so far just no painting on windy days.

Finally carputer- Haha I just built a new computer recently after my old video card (6800 ultra) fried. I took those components and rebuilt a new pc for the car. One thing to keep in mind is the thing thats so damaging about bumpy roads is the arms hitting the platters. While this is a problem with your generic PC Hard Drives. Laptop Hard Drives spin slower and are designed with the intention of being bounced around, ive got an older 2.5" HD for the Carputer in hopes that will prevent problems.
