Re: Converting to Power Steering 68 c10 6cyl

Well it looks like I will be rebuilding my steering column. Call it coincidence!
Since I was never able to turn my steering wheel freely, I guess I’ve probably had issues before and didn't know it!
It seems that something is binding up in there. I found that my blinking assembly looks and feels like it should be replaced. Most likely the upper bearing and lower one as well. I’ll know more once I get it all taken apart. Hopefully the horn parts also, since it hasn't work since I purchased it. I’ll post some pic’s later once I get it torn apart.

Re: Converting to Power Steering 68 c10 6cyl

I'm still waiting on some parts for my steering column, I hope to receive this week so I can start reassembly. Can you tell me if on the ps hose ends do i need to put teflon tape around the fittings before assembly? Or do I just screw them in?

No Teflon tape. Those are flared fittings. Just tighten them up.

Re: Converting to Power Steering 68 c10 6cyl

Well I hope to have time and finish up on this project. Last night I pulled the steering column and plan on cleaning replacing bearings and painting ait and reassemble. Hoping to get the rag joint on the pa gear add the hoses and tighten everything back up. If I get the free time needed I think I can finish and start a new project. Thanks for yous help. Scott

You will have a big smile on your face when you drive your truck the first time once power steering is installed.

I am hoping to be able to test ps tonight. I still have a couple of things to do like.
1.ebrake the bolt holes aren't lining up. I need to get this done.
2.put steering wheel back on.
3.fill ps fluid in pump. ( how much is needed to fill this?) turn lock to lock to work the air bubbles out of the system.
4.Radiator fill
5.tighten pitman arm /tie rod nut to 60ft lbs. Then test drive!!

I guess if I spent longer than 1 hr in the garage I could be already enjoying the ps.

Re: Converting to Power Steering 68 c10 6cyl

I honestly can't remember how much fluid it took. I bet a quart would be enough though.

Re: Converting to Power Steering 68 c10 6cyl

I'm doing a PS swap on my. '67 250 right now. Almost done tonight. Tomorrow morning I have to put the power steering hoses on and fill up the system and tighten up the 2 rag joint bolts and I'm done. Can't wait!

I know the feeling about not having much time.

Nice job. I completed mine finally, it drives or should I say steers nice. Now I think I have to decide what to do about the steering column. I pushed mine in about 3 " and the wheel is done touching my legs. So need to decide do I want a different steering wheel, or do I want to put in a tilt column.

But overall the ps conversion came out good. I am very happy with the results.
