Re: lets hear stories about how people dislike our trucks!!

I am 39 years old and have always wanted a 70-72 GMC 3/4 ton truck to restore to look like my dad's 70 custom camper. I finally found a 71 GMC custom camper "longhorn" on craig's list and traded my 98 chevy 4x4 vortec 350 for it straight across. I thought my wife was going to kill me but I was pleasantly surprised when she said, "Ok baby, take me for a ride."

The guys at work however, are another story. The 22 year old kid I work with drives a mustang. (that kinda speaks for itself if you ask me) He's always making comments about how many different colors it is and what not. I just smile at him and say. "On a clear day, you can hear a F*rd rust."

Others complain about the gas mileage my BB402 must get, we should all be going green, you know. I just smile tell them that I also leave the water running when I brush my teeth.

Here's the reality. I love this truck. Before she came into my life, I was an online gaming junkie. I have been paying 15-45 bucks a month to these gaming sites for 10 years or more and I have quit to allow more time with my truck. A man needs a hobby to keep his mind straight. This one is much more constructive than anything I've ever done. The cost of restoring her will be small in comparison to the SUV I just finished paying for that my wife drives. It has also given me the drive to begin to start working on my 83 dually that's been in need of some love for quite a few years.

Here's my advice:

Don't let anyone tell you what you should drive, who you should love, or what you should do for a living. If they do, they're not your friend. Do what makes you happy and what is good for those you care about. Nothing else matters in life.

Dan Smith

Sweet man, I wish some of my friends would restore the old cars/trucks they have instead of playing online games. These trucks are definitely time consumers!

Re: lets hear stories about how people dislike our trucks!!

Well, along time ago when I was in high school. I bought a 70 C-20 from my Uncle for $750. Paid for it my self cleaning stalls all summer seven days a week for $250 a summer. Any way She was a sweet truck 350 with a four speed and a ranger torque splitter. You could haul or tow anything. My Mother gave me nothing but hell for bringing that truck home. Used to make me park it out back so it wouldn't "ugly" up the house. Still talk to the truck.

Re: lets hear stories about how people dislike our trucks!!

most of my family understands that it is my truck. they all know I waited 20 some odd years to get this specific truck and noone is gonna take it from me. my wife on the other hand get somewhat grouchy at times with it sitting in the driveway looking all ugly and such. that is until we need a 3 ton load of dirt, 12,000# of rock and whatever else for her garden. or when we need to get drywall and lumber for the house or to haul the demolition debris to the dump.
most people in this area understand old trucks. many even look at them with respect the same way you look at grandparents. experienced, wise, and filled with integrity.

Class...either yous got it er ya don`t

If I had a dollar for every time someone questioned my thinking or just didn`t think much of any old vehicle I`ve had only to gawk at them once done I`d buy another peice of junk.
Pretty is the last thing on the list.People just show they don`t know what they`re talking about. Then, there`s envy. They don`t have to be a GM truck fan or into cars in general. They can just be jealous of the energy and motivation you have while they spend their spare time idle or following the heard when it comes to accepted forms of entertainment.

Over here in the UK most people smile when they see/hear my truck. The only negative vibes you get are from the lentil eaters whining about the environment, but hey, I can take that. My daily driver is the current hate target of the tabloid press here in the UK, a big 4x4 SUV so I get it from all angles.

Re: lets hear stories about how people dislike our trucks!!

im not saying i hate my truck... i love my 72 to death... i just tell them to back off and talk to me in a couple years when they have to take their cars to the shop where i can fix my truck without spending over 50% of money in labor... but it kinda sucked when i started tearing my truck apart like taking the bed off and taking the front clip off... i miss driving her but like i keep thinking..my end result will be well worth the wait!! i took it out for a drive down the road.... no front clip. no doors. no bed..no seat...i get goofy looks!!! haha

More people like these trucks than not.Non-truck people even like them.

Re: lets hear stories about how people dislike our trucks!!

Dan Smith you are on the money my man!

I was given my '71 C-10 by my grandfather (who bought it new in 71) so it will stay with me no matter what. I have cared for it for about 7-8 years now and it has been the most reliable car we have owned.

Most people want to buy it!

The only negatives have been by ***** ass neighbors over the years. Now we live out in the country and no one says a word... Granted our driveway is usually a mess of cars: 71 C-10, 79 Porsche 911SC, '66 VW Westfalia, '99 Suburban 6.5TD K2500, '96 K3500 Sierra 6.5TD, and the wifes new ride the '05 Escalade ESV.

With an Escalade and ratty C-10 in the driveway it confuses people... And I like it that way!

The only person that calls me out is one of my wifes good girl friends who is black and says I am a hillbilly and "shouldn't listen to all that twangin' music" (solid gold classic country baby!) It is all in good fun and I get a great laugh out of it... I call her bo' a P.Diddy wanna be so it evens out (actually he is a nice guy but you gotta talk a little trash)

... In summary I am 34 y/o and I could give a rats ass what other people think about me or my ride. I have lived enough adventures and done more than most men will so I feel no need to impress others with a new car/truck/TV/whatever.
