How to identify my NV3500 transmission
I have an NV3500 5 speed manual transmission that I'd like to put into my 1960 APACHE C10 that currently has a TH350 3 speed automatic. I know that they cam in both S10/S15 trucks as well as C1500 trucks. I don't have any history on this transmission other than it was rebuilt by an AC Delco dealer as it has the tag on the side with "AGHX U7 stamped on the top line with 24209895 stamped under that and a serial number 10 9088 008" stamped on the bottom. The casting number reads GM8679097. What I'm trying to figure out is if this is the close ratio "M50" or the wide ratio "MG5". Is there other numbers I should look for?

What size is the output shaft? S10 trans uses th350/4l60 size yoke. A full size used a th400/4l80 size. All full size trans are "wide" ratio an all S10 ones are "close" as far as i know.

Thanks, I'll look on Monday when I get back to the shop. I'm new to this style transmission. It will be going behind a very mild SBC. My daily driver.

It’s not an nv3500. When I google the part number, the application years are 88-91. The nv3500 didn’t come out until 93.

I called Midwest Transmissions who had a YouTube video on the NV3500. The person who answered was able to designate from the casting number (GM 867 9097) that the transmission was from a 92 C1500.
1991 NVG 5LM60 (late NVG= New Venture Gear 1993[1] New Venture Gear releases the NV3500. Externally the earlier GM units look like the NV3500; however the internal components were extensively redesigned. The HM290 and 5LM60 units have a complicated arrangement of 4 shift rails. The NV3500 has one shift rail.[2] There are two designs for the 5LM60 input shaft and bearings (input shaft and main shaft). The first design 1988–1990 has a ball bearing with a roller bearing behind it. The second design has a much larger single ball bearing. The first design bearings are reputed to be failure prone.[3] The updated input shaft and bearings carried through to the NV3500.

The five transmissions installed on 1988 to 1992 Chevrolet trucks, according to Drivetrain.com, were the Borg-Warner T5, the Getrag, Muncie or New Venture models HM290, 5LM60 and NV3500 and the New Venture NV4500. The NV4500 appeared on 1992 full-sized trucks only. Locating the manufacturer's tag, if present, is the easiest form of identification for all models, with visual methods reserved for general identification. Positive identification of these transmissions is accomplished through internal methods, especially when differentiating the HM290, 5LM60 and NV3500 models. Since the differences between these three are internal, removing the transmission is necessary.

The NV3500 transmission was first manufactured in 1988 and was known as an HM290. It was installed in GM trucks and eventually re-designated as the 5LM60, which had two different designs. The 290 and the 5LM60 had four shift rails. The NV3500 is manufactured for both four-wheel drive and two-wheel drive vehicles. The current NV3500 is found in full size GM trucks from 1988 and newer, S10 trucks from 1990 and newer, and Dodge Dakota V8 Ram trucks from 1994 and newer. The NV3500 is a five-speed manual transmission.
