GMC grilles,what's the difference

Ok I know all the grilles are very similar,but different in many ways.There is the painted one with GMC in the middle,painted without,chrome with and without,also painted in the center,and chrome around the edges.

So which one is which?Is it year specific or option package?

Thanks

67;
white or chrome, GMC in the center.
68;
exact same, without the lettering.
69-70
No more painted grills, same as 68, but with 3 pc 'eyebrow and hood trim"
71-72
similar to the 68 - 70, but with black accents making it look like 2 seperate grills.

The pic shows my 69 GMC. hopefully ppl will post there stuff too showing the difference.

'68s could have the thin chrome leading edge on the grille and fenders, but there is a noticeable difference between it and the chunkier style found on later years. i think its part of an appearance pkg. Also, fenders are interchangeable between all years of GMC (as well as '67-68 Chev). The hoods are the same too...slope hoods in 67-68. '69 and '70 grilles have a thin black stripe around the headlights only, its usually faded off. other than that, Andy hit the nail on the head.

he is correct for the most part. my 68 is niether white nor chrome. it is painted like an argent silver over bare metal. I know it is OE as I am the second owner. but then again other stuff on my truck doesnt seem to match with the "norm". (i.e. older style armrests, funky rear view mirror etc.) maybe because it was purchased from a farm implement dealer in cattle rancher country.(Ft. Pierre, SD)

My 68 "had" the eyebrows and hood trim, they were so badly beaten up I removed them and temporarily filled the holes. When I get rich I'll replace those pieces.
My grill has the black stripe around the headlights and looks exactly like the one pictured above.

This truck is a "Custom Camper" if that has anything to do with it.

If you take a 70 grill and remove the top trim will it work with the 67-68 hood? I have a hood but the top trim is riveted to the grill. I think I can grind the rivets off and keep the mounting brackets but i wonderif it will leave a gap between the bottom edge and the grill (the hood is a chevy hood).

Thanks, Roger

It will leave a gap. A 67/68 GMC top "bar" will be needed in place of the 69-72 version. 67/68 GMC top bars are approx 3/4 inch tall, riveted to grill as the chrome 69-72 version, but are painted the same color as the truck.

Once you have the top bar, hood latch mechanism and hood off a 67/68 GMC, you can use any year grille with these pieces. I plan on doing this with my 72 GMC plow truck someday. I've already amassed the parts. The top bar and hood latch mechanism can be hard to find.

I have seen this as well, but never a white painted 68 grille, only chrome and the agent silver described above.

I was afraid of that. The 68 chevy grill I've got is looking better all the time...

Are there two different bumpers, or should they all have the indentations for the turn signal lights?

here is my '68. I wasnt aware of any indents for the lights. I think GMC & Chevy share the same bumper. also my top bar is held to the grill with a plethora of sheet metal screws instead of rivets. (I had to remove it to replace the cam when it still had the I6)

No. As far as bumpers go...

67/68 GMC bumpers did not have the indentations. Only 69-72 GMC's did. That means that 67/68 GMC and 67-70 Chevy front bumpers are identical.
