messed with my intake tonight

a member here named mitch gave me a free edelbrock performer intake...i sandblasted it down and shot 5 coats of clear on it..then i took my old intake off and then found my freakin intake gasket was screwed up so i have to wait till tomorrow to finish....as i was lookin at it i decided i need to tear it all apart and repaint everything.....im going to be buying the GM style aluminum tall valve covers for it so i set this old set of tall ones on there for now to see what it looked like...

2 questions....
#1 what would cause gasket sealant to get brittle and fall out? i dont remember what type i used but it freakin turned flaky and leaked like crazy.

#2 also what can you clean a carburetor up with?

it started with this blue one...

first; nice carb!

next;i'm probably stirrin' it up here but; if you want a great head coverat a decent price that WON'T leak like the cast covers, get the billet ones from jegs.i paid $66 a few years ago for mine.short, plain polished BILLET THAT DOESN'T LEAK!
i've had the M/T'S, holley's,edelbrock tall & short elite's & others that were cast & they all leaked.seems cast aluminum warps when heated.

next;67ChevyC10Stepside,
answer #1:heat &/or inferior product.
gaskasynch works great.looks like you used the yellow junk.it's notorious for that.
answer #2:carb cleaner from wally world $.88/can.great stuff.
don't spray it on the carb while it's running!fire, fire! bad, bad!
felpro makes an excellent rubber/cork end seal.it has a good adhesive on one side.just peal & stick.lasted me about three years before it started seeping at the front.

im going to be buying a fel pro intake set tomorrow....dont know what it comes with though...was thinking of using the plain ones with a little touch of sealer to help...i dont mean the inside of the carb...i mean the outside...show me a pic of these billet ones you speak of...i like the look of the GM style...and i want tall ones...dont like the short look.and as far as you stirrin it up everyone has there opinions...it's better to open your mouth and maybe help someone then to worry about offending someone.

ok. i'll post a pic of mine tomorow.looks like jegs don't sell them anymore.
if you have the cash, get some fabbed covers.they are the best.
if i understand correctly, you want to clean the exterior of your carb.the above mentioned carb cleaner will work great.it comes in spray cans & is basically toluene with some xylene mixed in.
if you want to clean the interior berrymans chemdip or carbdip works great.

if you get the plain cork without adhesive, get some gaskasynch for them.
i'm talkin the endseals.don't put anything on the actual intake gaskets.
rtv is the absolute worst thing to use for the endseals.gasoline in the oil will destroy it.

is that the original engine? was it a 6cyl before? If so whoeaver instaled that motor most likely droped the motor in the 6cyl stand. The v8 stands are made difrently and drops the motor closer foward to the rad thus farther away from firewall.
