K30 axle question

Did the K30 come with a 10 bolt axle in the front as a option or was it just the 60?
My reason for asking:

Re: K30 axle question

Generally...all K30's had dana 60's. However i'm fairly certain a K30 never came with a factory big block. Guess i need to go to our brochure page (www.blazerchalet.com) and confirm that piece of info.

Re: K30 axle question

All K-30's came with the Dana 60 in the front providing it was a solid-axle truck. The Dana 60 do have 10-bolts holding the front cover on so the seller might have mistook it for a GM 10-bolt. The 3/4 tons and 1/2 tons came with the 10-bolt or Dana 44 (depending on year). Without a front axle picture, you can't tell what front axle in under the truck. The K-30 can have a factory 454 v-8 which was available as an option.

Re: K30 axle question

Either that truck is not a 1 ton, or somebody swapped the front end. You can see in the front shot pic that is NOT a Dana 60. I know you can get the 454 in a 1 ton, but not sure in a 3/4 ton.

Re: K30 axle question

Yeah, something looks screwy there, it's definately a 10 bolt. So it's been swapped or it's not really a K30.

I just love to read the garbage that is spewed by those who try to sound like experts when they are discribing their stuff though.....

The "super heavy duty" Turbo 400 and NP205 come to mind and then couple that with those junk automatic hubs? and try to make it sound like a good thing?

Re: K30 axle question

Why is he calling it a Blazer?I think it`s a really nice truck and with the reserve met already,he wasn`t asking too much.I looked at the front axle and can`t tell.It could be a D60,pretty stout. The tie-rod blocks being able to gauge the diameter. That isone fine`80.

Re: K30 axle question

There is a hyperlink to view a larger pic. I did that with the front shot and saw no prob that has a 10 bolt. And "super rare" 205?? Hmm, all 80 models have the 205. I"m sure it has the even rarer slip yoke. It is a nice truck though.

Re: K30 axle question

The whole description of the truck is lame and full of misinformation. Something very screwy going on. 454 in a 4wd being 1 ton or not was not available to my knowledge until the 90s. The front end definately has been swapped out. If it was a truly 'heavy duty tow package' it would have a dual battery set-up. Also a 400/205 setup was available in the 3/4 ton on special order with the camper special option. This guy is full of sh..

Re: K30 axle question

I agree, something is not right. You could get a BBC in that style 4wd, and that tranny/case combo in a 3/4. The only thing that I can come up with for calling it a Blazer is some people do a search for Blazer, k-5, etc. That link will come up when searched that way. I always wondered why there is so much extra info in the title that doenst need to be.

Re: K30 axle question

Also are there two different weight ratings on the K30's? Like for a single wheel and a dual wheel.

I might have a pic on my HD of an '86 K30 with a 454, factory. They were available.

And yes, I am pretty sure the K30's had a few different gvw's.
The cab & chassis dually can be had with an 11,000#- I am sure the pickups are less.

SRW K30 pickups of that generation were 8600 lb GVWR.

Re: K30 axle question

I supersize the picture that showed the back shot and was able to see the axletubes. Everyone else is right that it is not a D60 because the axletubes are too small. Looks like a good older 3/4-ton 4x4 to mebut I would definitely want to check it out in person.

Re: K30 axle question

Just some more proof that it is a 10 bolt...
I lightened this pic, see the front diff? It has 2 little "ears" on the bottom- this is unique to the 10 bolt. The D44 and D60 do not have these.

Re: K30 axle question

Big blocks were available in K30s when they came out in 1977. For a pickup, the weight ratings were 10,000 lbs. GVW for dual wheel K30s, and 9200 lbs. GVW for single wheel K30s. One of the easiest way to tell folks how to tell if it is a Dana 60 or not is by how many stud/nuts hold the steering arm onto the driver's side knuckle. 4 stud/nuts is a Dana 60. 3 stud/nuts is a Dana 44 or corporate 10 bolt.

Re: K30 axle question

That is funny….I thought I was the only one that noticed the little 10 bolt front axle in the other forum and wondered…hmmm.

Despite the wrong front axle, this truck looks like a legit 1 ton to me by the hydroboost brakes and the looks of the rear axle U-bolts. The ½ and ¾ ton trucks had U-bolts that were mounted with the nuts and saddles above the axle tube. 1 tons had the U-bolts mounted where the saddle and nuts were mounted under the axle tube. Look at the pictures again and look at the rear axle.

Still makes you wonder how a corp 10 bolt found it’s way into a 1 ton… Was the truck wrecked or did a previous owner sell it out from under the truck??? Hmmm….

Nice truck though.

Re: K30 axle question

By 1980 the 205 was not commonly used.It was in the K/30s,though.Ever since the full-times came out,the 205 was dropped except for K/30s and 8600# K/20s.I believe it was the 203 after the full-time 208.At least that`s what I`ve always seen.

From what I've seen...every 4x4 made in 1980 used a NP205 w/ slip yoke.

You also got the other two switched...the 208 came after the full time 203. Brain fart!

Re: K30 axle question

Every 1980 got a 205, regardless of what it is. Then after that it was the 1 tons that got the 205, everythign else got a 208.

Re: K30 axle question

But what about the 1984-1987 military CUCV K30s that had a 208 transfer case??

Re: K30 axle question

For some reason they got the 208, who knows why. It's the government, do they ever do anything normal?? Probable cause it was cheaper to go with the 208 over the 205. At that time there were more of the 400/208 combo than the 400/205 combo.

Re: K30 axle question

My guess is for the lower low range ratio in the 208. The 205 was spec'd on some of the heavier CUCV trucks because it had PTO capability.
