Exhaust Exit Location???

I was just wondering where everyone has their exhaust tips coming out? Mine used to be coming out under each corner of the bumper at an angle, but the mufflers were rusted off, so I pulled the whole mess off and plan on rebuilding. I will be using flo-pro mufflers (similar to flowmasters) and the exhaust is dual 2". I was thinking of having it come out just in front of the rear wheels, kind of like an AAR Cuda used to have or a Challenger T/A, with the nice angled stainless tips, but I'm not sure if that will result in nasty interior noise. I liked how it looked before, but I want to consider all my options before I do anything. Any pictures? Thanks!

Ditto that, dumped behind the mufflers. Nearly all my driving is short in-town, so the exhaust never gets hot enough to dry the water from the pipes. When they went over the axle and out the back, they rusted out quickly.

Re: Exhaust Exit Location???

Mine is in front of the wheels. Just easy to do if I could have I would bring it out behind the wheels.

Flo Pros are crappy IMO they rot out really fast. I have them on my grand prix and they are toast after 1 1/2 years. That hwy driving. I would get flow masters somthing with a thick case as well as thick baffles.

Re: Exhaust Exit Location???

I've been thinking about a side exhaust, through the trailing arm crossmember then a cut out in the bed panel. Might have to go through the frame, too.

Figured I would tube in pipe where I cut the frame and crossmember...

Re: Exhaust Exit Location???

I have a short bed and there was just too little space under there for me to squeeze in the mufflers and get the pipes over the rear axle and out the back. So, I went with straight out of the headers to a H pipe, to the mufflers and then angled out from them to exit just ahead of the rear wheels. The H pipe is directly under the transmission x-member and is a little recessed into there. Everything is welded, no clamps, 2 hangers, and can easily be removed as one unit just by unbolting at the Headman ball and socket collector. Not too loud in the cab with Summit turbos.

Re: Exhaust Exit Location???

When I had the stroker motor in my 72, I had dumps out of the muffler in front of the axle and it was LOUD. Now that she has a stock engine, I turned the tailpipes out behind the rear wheels, kinda like the old Novas in the 60's.

Re: Exhaust Exit Location???

When I had my exhaust system done, I had plans to lower it. So, the mufflers were installed beneath the floor, outside of the frame, and the pipes were run to dump just ahead of the rear tires.

Now that it has been lowered, and since more than 4 years have elapsed since the lowering....and more than 5 years since the exhaust system (Flowmaster 40-series), I'm thinking of re-doing the system with an X-Pipe and placing the mufflers after the cab with the tail pipes extending to just below the rear corners of the bed, tucked in behind the rear bumper but just peeking out a little. Saw a '72 SWB, waaaaay back in a '99 issue of Custom Classic Trucks that was set up for the Texas Motor Speedway as a pace (?!) truck. Anyway, that's how they set up their tail pipes and I liked the way it looked. Besides, it's a little louder now that I am older....something you young un's have forward to looking to enjoy. I'm almost grown, though, so Flowmasters will still be on it!

Re: Exhaust Exit Location???

72_Chev_Truck,
Your exhaust is similar to my plans for the GMC. Which Spintech mufflers did you go with? I was planning to buy the Sprortsman Street XL's. As compared to flowmaster 40 series how do the spins compare in the way of sound and quality of construction?

I did what you are wanting to do. It got my exhaust tucked up inside the frame. I haven't cut my bed panel as of yet but will be here in the spring. Trucks on TV did a short on how to do it and I want to do the same. And yes you have to cut a hole in the frame. I reinforced the frame from behind but I don't haul or tow with the truck so there is no real weight to worry about.

Re: Exhaust Exit Location???

I just got a new exhaust on my truck Friday, it sounds sweet! There's about half a foot of 2" coming off the ramhorns, then it goes to 2 1/4", through dual 18" glasspacks right under the cab, and dumps right in front of the trailing arms with turndowns on each side. It makes a loping sound at an idle and has a mean, loud rumble when you revv the engine. Here's a pic, just ignore all those rust holes in the cab.

I brought mine out beside the hitch. I really like the looks of it there, plus it matches my S-15 that way.

Yep. That's what got me thinking about it. I watched Stacy do it and thought that it couldn't be that hard.

I plan to weld in tube through the frame and the crossmember. Structurally, my frame will actually be stronger. I'll plate the inside as well.

i went with the sportsman streets, they seem to be built alot heavier then the flowmasters. they sound unique compared to any other exhaust ive heard. it seemed like each one weighed 20 pounds. they are not labeled all that well to tell you what the input and exit is. mine came with a marker written on the input. good enough though. well built and i like them... if i had some way of recording the sound i would do it,

Re: Exhaust Exit Location???

Stacks Actually, on a diesel truck with the pump turned up it is the only option if you actually want to see anything behind you after standing on the go pedal. I have one on the driverside right behind the post for the headache rack on my stake body. Its not chrome, just black as I really don't like the look on a pickup. People sure stare when I let out the clutch and get on the go pedal at a light, then this big cloud forms behind the cab when I drive my '71

Re: Exhaust Exit Location???

I've thought that it would be cool to put the exit in the normal place no tips there or have turndowns under the truck. Then have cable or electric operated cut-outs with chrome tips exiting right in front of the doors at the secton of the front fender that is behind the wheel pening. What do y'all think about that?

Re: Exhaust Exit Location???

I will be running 2 1/2" or 3" all the way out the back to the rear corners. I built a custom tranny X-member and mouse holed the trailing arm x-member. Then from their it will go over the axel and out the back. My truck is on th elow side that is why I went thru this much trouble.
