Forget powder coat or POR, Galvanize your frame!!

Found this over at chevelles.com

Hot dip galvanizing a frame is apparently cheaper than powdercoating.

http://www.chevelles.com/forums/show...ght=GALVANIZED

The car guys have a lot of discussion about painting over the galvanizing, but I think for a truck, I would leave it bare. And heres a link to a company that has lots of locations:

http://www.nagalv.com

Anyone here have any experience with this?

wow thats a cool idea. I may have to call a round and see how much it would be to do a truck frame.

I don't know whether I like the "galvanized" look, but it should prevent rust.

just make sure you are done with any welding you may need to do before getting it done.

Galvanizing will still let the steel rust but it will slow it down alot. You can paint over it to with the correct paint which would help it even more. Sportsman trailers in DIckinson Texas used to take in work from individuals at times. Don't know if they still do.

Re: Forget powder coat or POR, Galvanize your frame!!

The K10 frame I had done for a friend was $200 for powder. That is a cool idea and could be an option, but I like the way powder works and the price difference isn't enough for me to do something else.

Of course my truck may never get down to the frame, so POR15 is about as good as it will get for a while.

Re: Forget powder coat or POR, Galvanize your frame!!

One thing to remember when discussing the difference between powder coating and galvanizing is how the process is done. Unless you plan to take every rivet out of your frame, you will never get in all the cracks and crevices with powder coating.

With galvanizing your frame is dipped in a tank and boiled so the galvanizing gets in all the hard to reach places. That gives you a much more complete coverage compared to powder coating.

It just depends on what you want your frame to look like, and the level of protection you think it needs.

I suppose you would need to decide how long you want to keep the truck and if you drive in rusty conditions. If I lived in the rust belt I would sure give it consideration.

Re: Forget powder coat or POR, Galvanize your frame!!

one thing with galvernizing after you get the frame back you need to debur some of the zink that leaked off the end or you cut yourself to the bone and you need to retap and/or redrill every hole you need to use to make sure it all fits back the way it came off

Re: Forget powder coat or POR, Galvanize your frame!!

even if it takes me an hour or two to retap and make sure all the holes are the right size i still think it would be worth it. i'll keep everyone updated. now all i need to find are instructions on painting galvanized metal.

Re: Forget powder coat or POR, Galvanize your frame!!

Painting galvanized should be no problem if you acid wash and rinse with clean water. Blow it dry and then prep as you would any other metal. Prime and paint.
I love mine the way it is.
