'69 GMC shift lever swap

How hard is changing out the automatic shift lever on the column on '69 GMC?
Can it be done without tearing the steering column apart? I bought a new one from GMCPaul's, because my original is rusty. TIA, David

Re: '69 GMC shift lever swap

quite easy.
The steps depend one one thing though... is this a tilt, or a straight column?

Re: '69 GMC shift lever swap

if I remember right... and some one correct me if I am wrong... pop the pin that holds the lever in there, wiggle it a bit, and slip the new one in and replace the pin. It's been 5 or 6 years since I have messed with the straight column... so lets get another opinion on it... but I think it's a simple R&R... no shifter spring like the newer ones or the tilt.

Re: '69 GMC shift lever swap

Why wait? It only takes about 5 minutes. Think of how much better you will feel knowing you accomplished something.
