coolant leak?

I have a '04 Z71 with a 5.3, I noticed a puddle under my truck the other day but didn't think anything of it. Then yesterday I looked and it was bigger, I haven't drove it in a few days, it was antifreeze. I couldn't really tell where it was coming from, I'll look better at it today. Looks like it might be coming from the water pump. It has about 40,000 miles.

Anyone else had a problem with a leak?

Re: coolant leak?

I had the same problem only mine was a very slow leak. It ended up being water pump gaskets. They have 2 o-rings made into each gasket and the dexcool just eats em up. Mine started about 60k miles. It could also be the weep hole in the pump. Dexcool rots everything if you are out of warranty I would flush it and put regular green of some type of mix all in it when you fix it. Keep us posted.

Re: coolant leak?

Apparently it is a pretty common problem, the gaskets leaking. It is a pretty slow leak. I was told by the tech from the dealership that I trust, and I saw it on a couple other sites, to put the metal felpro gaskets on it. I guess I know what I'll be doing Friday.
I also saw while researching this, that there is a fix for the clunking from the driveline, a nickle plated slip yoke. y'all probably knew that already though

Just to rant a little, there is a dealership about 3/4 mile from my house that sucks. I took my truck there several times about the steering losing power when stopped or real slow speeds, the clunking sound, steering wheel sqeaking, and seems like something else that they said to all of them each time "we couldn't duplicate the problem"
And if I call them to ask about somthing like the coolant leak they say "well, bring it in and we'll take a look at it"
The dealership about 40 miles away is awesome I call them and they'll answer any questions and tell me what I need to fix it.
Good grief my truck has had a lot of problems!

Re: coolant leak?

My 04 Z71 just got back from the dealer with the same problem. The water pump gasket was leaking. I talked to the service manager and he said that it is very common on the 2004 to do that at about 40,000 miles.
He said that on the 2005 they have not done any.

Re: coolant leak?

Well, I replaced the gaskets and the next day there was a puddle, I stuck my head as far as I could under the truck and saw it is actually coming out of the weep hole...I should have looked better the first time...I just figured since others had leaking gaskets that's probably what mine was.
