I am just starting on the body work, and I know that bare metal can't be left for too long . I will be on and off this job, and want to know if I spray rattle can primer on the bare metal, (where I am fixing the rust), will it have to be removed and a good primer layed on before paint? Or am I wasting my time with this step?

The rattle can primer should be removed and resprayed with quality primer. But as a temporary thing, if you are not planning on leaving it like that for like a year, it should work just fiine. Make sure it is completely removed though. Others on this board have used it for this purpose.

If your options are to rattle can it, then remove later for real primer, or let your freshly fixed metal rust, I don't think it would be considered as "wasting your time".

Non-epoxy primers offer little protection against rust, especially the rattle cans. If the primer is left uncover for more than a week, depending on your climate, rust will form under the primer. Shoot over the primer with a coat of enamel, it's not that much harder to remove than just the primer.
