Post steering column swaps

i read on the parts board about swapping later model steering columns in 67 to 72's. has anyone done this, what was involved besides wiring, did it require much cutting, altering of the instrument panel. would love to put a caddy tilt/tele in my new project.....68 swb fleet w/ 96 5-speed (was a 3 on the tree) and related parts, looking for an lt1 setup. in need of 68 radiator core support (anybody)

My 69 short step has a tilt/telescopic column from either a Caddy or Pontiac. (about 78?-good guess anywho) It was in it when I bought it so not sure on all the details.

I do know that part of the instrument bezel had to be trimmed out as the column is fatter. Other than that, it looks like a bolt in. (no obvious mods)

It does have a key on the column that im leaving there to confuse any would be thieves. LOL Let them try to start my truck from the column.

i wuld never use a 73-up or car column with key switch in it in a 67-72, never, i could see if swapped a tilt telscope of other cool column into a 73-up since wiring is meant for the key switch in column style column, i just dont think its right, thats my IMO, if I was looking at a truck to buy and saw A later model column in it, i would probably turn away from it, thats how strongly i feel that most stock items in these trucks are fine how they are and are very cool, tuening a classic inot a later model truck by doing stupid things like that are retarded I think, ruins whole poiint of having the classic. now, i could see if it was an emergency and you had NO column at all and needed oen asap to move truck around, i almost did this to the 71 with the caddy telescope column but im no,w am selling column dirt cheap cuz I want stock correct column that will bolt in and not ruin my wiring and dash. plus they look better than newer columns, they are fine how they were designed, especially the tilts,

just my IMO

good luck with yours

thanks a lot for the info guys, i am not really interested in originally, just individuality. i have the 68 and the gto to satisfy that "original" urge , and even they has fuel injection (hate carbs). i'm more into custom than original. any job done right is worthy of praise, even if it's "self" praise. i chopped the hell out of by blazer, and slung a camaro front clip and rearend under it and don't regret it a bit because i like 'em low.

hey fast, i agree that they look better but after i pitch the tank from behind the seat and slide it back, a tilt/tele sure is comfortable. i'm 6'3" and need lots of leg space.

Personally, I think that all the classic you need from these trucks is in the body style. I'm going in the opposite direction Fast68 is. I want the look, but I also want the luxury and convenience. Power windows, door locks, cruise, tilt, air, etc. I want the new car features in a classic body style. Much like all the street rods you see being built. Just my opinion!

Hey Fast, did you get a chance to check on the carbs for me?

Fast68Chevy I for one posted this same topic a few weeks ago cause I for one cannot afford to pay extremely large amounts of money for the tilt columns.I might be one of the retarded ones you refer to BUT at least I'm no f--king dumbass that would post stupid and idiotic topics such as Non-Chevy Truck Topics daily.
IMO YOUR OPINION SUX!!!!!

i am not bashing fast's views, he has a right to cast his opinion and i admire his honesty. i just believe it's all about individuality, and i'm full of it. i once had a cobra oval air cleaner on my gto, and i got royally reamed everytime i popped the hood. as a result, i sold it to some f*#d loving idiot on ebay for 175.00 and bought a sweet billet one for my goat with gas money leftover.

HEAVY CHEVY,
If you have a problem with a member, take it to the e-mail, or to the moderators.
Fast happens to be a huge asset to this group. He is just speaking his opinion.
And on the topic,
I would have to say I to, would never do that. But I am open to adding some things to them that were not original though.

Well I wouldn't turn down a vehicle just because of a steering column. You can swap in an original for under $50 if it bothered you that much. I don't care for the key on the column but the tilt/tele is too cool to replace. I still use the key on the dash.

My truck had alot of non original items when I bought it like '65 Impala tail lights, newer bench seat/floor shifter, non original engine/trans, stainless steel bed floor, aluminum slots, etc. While I like originallity too, I couldn't pass up on this truck. A '69 short stepside in decent condition and partly customized for $1000 doesn't come along everyday.

It's been my best friend since! LOL

Yes please, lets not get into a tizzy. LOL

I too felt a bit offended since fast replied after me and im the one with the non original column but everyone is entitled to his/her oppinion. (and I agree somewhat with him too)

You guys do alot more "modernizing" than my steering column. How many of you have swapped to disc brakes, or have a newer 4 speed auto trans, electronic ignition, custom gauges, etc?

I too don't like old cars/trucks modernized but a little customizing doesn't bother me. Everything on my truck can be changed back to original if I wanted a plain, low optioned bland truck. Im having way too much fun with it the way it is. Hood scoop included! LOL

Peace.

Ahhh..,,the custom vs stocker again! the board seems to be split between the resto guys ,& the customizers/rodders. I for 1 like the trucks customized,& have done a lot of mods,& a lot of hard work. Each truck is a reflection of the owners inividual taste,& imagination & also what parts are available for what price. If i had to drive a bone stock 67-72.......I would not be interested. They are a nice old truck, but as with any vehicle ,I beleive that they can be improved from the factory specs. Its Your truck, build it the way You want it,& dont worry about the guys that dont like it! I have seen a few mods that wouldnt be for me,but I choose to keep quiet & admire the craftmanship that went into the buildup.......69 longhorn.
