How do you define "original"

I found this listing on CollectorCarTraderOnline.com that states the truck is "ALL ORIGINAL/STOCK CONDITION". From looking at the one photo in the listing, clearly the truck has modifications, like the wheels, mirrors, roof rack, etc. Additionally, it states it has a 327, which as far as I know, wasn't offered in the Blazer (maybe they meant 307).

Anyway, it got me thinking about what is considered original. My truck is quite original, but not completely. It has a lift, soft top, ash tray converted to cup holder, and the original owner recovered the front seats at some point. Overall, my truck looks more original than the one listed, but I wouldn't claim it to be "ALL ORIGINAL/STOCK CONDITION".

What do you think is "ALL ORIGINAL/STOCK CONDITION"?

Re: How do you define "original"

All original should be just that. Now, there are certain "wear" items on vehicles. They should be replaced with "original type" replacements to retain that all original claim.

Also depends on price. If your asking $20k for a ride it better be all OEM. On the other hand if your asking 10k then some adjustments can be made, as long as the replacements have been done in a manner similar to original.

Now don't get me wrong, there are some beautiful customs out there that bring mucho dollars and should. But they are advertised as custom not stock.

I think the question is also the answer. On this board we've seen a few that fit this category like the one that was recently in SD. Those are "ALL ORIGINAL/STOCK CONDITION" and you can tell right off. Some people are looking to get more cash out of their sale so they add words like that influenced by the Barret Jackson show.

BTW, I couldn't get the linked page to load, does it still work?

Re: How do you define "original"

The Blazer is obviously not "original". I think the seller choose the wrong word to describe that vehicle. He likely meant "unrestored". Perhaps he meant the paint was original. But that dies not make sense either since the K/5 fender emblem has been painted over. Um.... maybe he meant original color. Or perhaps he meant the Blazer was originally nice. Anyway, the modifications mentioned above make the vehicle not original. The passenger side gas door is not original either.

Re: How do you define "original"

all original to me is basically as it came from the factory, except for tires and other things like that that are wear items. Add on roof rack doesnt kill it , but a 327, "Wagon wheels" and Ford mirrors do when it comes to being "all original"

some people understand the "all original" concept better than others though ---

Everyone has seen the restorations complete with correct chalk marks on the firewall, factory hubcaps etc. --- that is all original

90% of the trucks driving around are not

"FACTORY" being the key word! Allot of add on's were dealer bolt on's to boost the sticker price and people think their vehicle came from the factory this way. Original condition leaves to much grey area in the interpetation where factory #ed correct leaves none. It is what it is.

Re: How do you define "original"

Alot depends on the sellers 'personnel perception' to the definition of "original"

I see 'original' as the way it was, as in untouched but some see it as
"the way it could of/would of come from the factory" which in alot of cases works too.

Interesting thread.

Re: How do you define "original"

So VT, do you consider your green Blazer to be "original" or some degree of "original?"

Re: How do you define "original"

307's showed up around January of '69. IF their were any Blazers built in the late fall of 68 as 69 models, they might have had a 327. I have a 69 short bed stepside that is a 327 even though 307 are the most prevalent for base motors.

Yes, to a fairly high degree of "original" mainly due to the attention to detail.
Meaning, using the correct hardware where it should be used.
(nuts, bolts, screws as the factory did)

Would I sell it "as original", no.
Restored to original...maybe. Resto mod restored, sure.

My 70 SWB 4X4 is though.
*Original mileage.
*All original sheet metal.
*Original engine/tranny/t-case and axles. (entire drive-train)
No mods, no changes from factory.
That's what I'd consider to be an original truck.
Even at that, it's got an HEI ignition.

I'd consider your Blazer to be original too.
Some mods are okay but others cancel out the meaning.

Even then, there's degree's of original.

Re: How do you define "original"

Original is as shipped from the factory to the dealer. I would also allow for replacement of maintenance items as described in service manual--tires, brakes, fluids, hoses and belts---but should be GM. There are really very few original vehicles from the 60-70 around. And I wouldn't pay extra for one but would for the right modifications---radial tires, HEI ignition, Internal reg altinator, etc.

Re: How do you define "original"

I would not want an 'original' vehicle. You are just paying a premium for something that should never be driven. Thats just a museum piece. Besides we don't want to be driving things that have not had some updating for reliability, convenience, safety and pure thrills. I agree with Hucks assessment.

Unhappy Re: How do you define "original"

This is my 1970 Blazer. This is factory original, except for the radial tires and cap/plug wires. It is a rot box, but I have almost everything to restore it to day one.

Re: How do you define "original"

1970cstblazer, looks like a nice truck and an excellent starting point. Your truck is a prime example. I would consider it original, but I see at least two modifications from the photos (both may be dealer) – the spots and the pin-stripe on the hood and doors.

Is it a CST? I can't tell if their is woodgrain in the trim or not and the mirror are blocking the view of the top of the door where the emblem is.

One thing I'm not familiar with is the stickers on the valve covers.

It makes me wonder if it is a replacement engine.

The spots, tow hooks and mirrors were installed by the dealer. It is a CST.

The Invader 350 valve cover decal is original. The truck is totally numbers matching and correct, including the TCS smog control equipment, and externally regulated alternator. I tuned it up today, and removed the tan Accel cap, and replaced it with a correct black one.

My dad is the original owner, and has verified that the decal has been there since day one. It might be a factory error, if GMC's were the only ones that were supposed to have them.

When I restore it, I will retain the decals, and reproduce the chalk writing on the firewall. It is also getting bias ply tires very similar to the original equipment Goodyear Custom Xtra Grips. The spotlights will be omitted, but the tow hooks, and mirrors will stay.

I've never seen the stickers. The mirrors are factory correct 69-70 mirrors. You can get repops in chrome. I'm not sure if they came in chrome originally though.
