Should I buy this tailgate

I dropped a fender off at the sandblaster and the guy was trying to sell me a tailgate. for pretty cheap

He said its been in his attic for about 20 yrs and if theres any rust on it its only surface rust. He said its a chevy one with the wood looking trim peice on the back that says Chevrolet. I think he said it's red (not that that really matters) He also said its in "like mint condition"

Apparently me and him have a different idea of the term mint. It's in good shape and very solid but not mint as he said.

I have a whole bunch of pics of it if anyone wants to see more. Im still trying to figure out how to work this camera so I can get some good pictures(Its my roomates and he paid $500 for it so I would think it should be able to take good pics)

Re: Should I buy this tailgate

A decent original should bring $200 easily.
A very nice original $300.
A perfect original with perfect factory paint, probably $500+

Re: Should I buy this tailgate

those holes would be simple to fill in so I would say 100-150 bucks, it is really straight, most tailgates have small dents from backing into stuff but that one doesn't have that

Re: Should I buy this tailgate

i personally wouldn't pay anything for it, not with rust holes in it. if the trim piece is nice, that would be worth something but the gate itself is scrap, in my opinion. i have several gates in my backyard that have no rust at all in them but do have dents and dings and i consider mine scrap too.
i hope i don't pi$$ anyone off with my reply but anytime i see rust, i won't even give the part a second look.

Re: Should I buy this tailgate

mint with rust holes! thats a new one i wouldn't pay more than i thought the trim was worth. i think if theres holes there then the rest is pretty thin but it's your call

That is a luxury that you west coasters have. This is a decent gate almost anywhere else in the country.

Re: Should I buy this tailgate

Have the guy pull the trim and lightly blast it. That way you will see if there is more rust and how bad the holes are you can see.

This tailgate is not scrap or junk. It is a workable piece. I'd say 150 max...

Re: Should I buy this tailgate

I bought it, and have lightly sanded some of the spots, there is no serious pitting or anything. Even around those holes it is not bad
Its actually very solid.

Ive seen much worse around here. If nobody on here is interested in it then I guess Ill try to get rid of it locally.

And yes I was a little surprised by what he meant by "mint" too

If there aren't rust holes in it around here, run... because it's probably not original.

Re: Should I buy this tailgate

I think Im gonna just throw it on craigslist for sale out here and see if I get any bites

I dont need this tailgate, Ive got a rust free one and I dont like the ones with wooden trim anyways

I just picked it up cause I thought it was a decent price, maybe Ill be able to use it to trade someone if im not able to sell it out here or if nobody on here wants it.

I don't need to be a member to sell it on craigslist,

I probably should look into getting a membership on here though since I have a bunch of stuff I want to start getting rid of.

What Putter said (on BOTH items!) - Too bad I wasn't speaking to my parents, I'd have you run it out to Central Square and I'd pick it up later - not happening though - it was nine years last time so it might be a while! hahahaha

OK, then when I say they are technically in West Monroe, you really know where I mean. My brother just moved to Maine from there - dang it - I was speaking with him... go figure!

Re: Should I buy this tailgate

That is a fine tailgate for the east coast. You west coast guys are lucky when it comes to original parts for these trucks. We on the Atlantic side of the globe have to do a little metal work to make things look good.
