Locker ID

Can someone identify this locker for me, it is in a 12 bolt rear that is NOT original to my 68K10.

Also, is the gear ratio stamped on the ring somewhere?

Thanks!!

Re: Locker ID

the teeth count should be on the ring. like 41.11 or 41 11 or something like like.

Re: Locker ID

I found the following stamped on the ring...

3817779
14:43
GM
04762

Does this mean this is a 3.08 gear ratio?

Re: Locker ID

That is what GM calls a "Gov-Loc"....and everyone else calls a boat anchor.
They are weak and over-engineered. Any reasonable amount of torque along with decent traction spells the end. When it goes it will send junk through your gear and bearings. If you have to use it....go easy.

That little "clock-works" mechanism is supposed to act as a governor (hence the name) It is supposed to only allow pressure to the clutches when one wheel spins a certain % faster than the other. It is also supposed to not allow pressure to the clutches over a certain RPM.

It never locks that is a huge mis-understanding because of the name. It is a glorified posi....that is not so glorious.

Re: Locker ID

I was afraid that's what it was. I had read on here about them and knew they did not get good reviews.

So it looks like I've got an axle with a non-desirable gear ratio (3.08) and a not so great locker/posi. traction unit.

Re: Locker ID

damn, i was just gonna respond with this, and tell you to scroll down ~20 posts : http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=281312

glad you got it figured out. there are some interesting/thoughtful posts up in that thread if you wanna look. If you're anywhere nearby to me and you want to pick up the rear end I have pictured with the axle housing and 5-lug axles (currently removed), let me know. happy to help a fellow board member out (at least mine has a better ratio )

PS - a little birdie told me that these G80 locker units are the ones they're still using today in newer vehicles, so ... they can't be THAT bad.

Re: Locker ID

I have had great service from the one in my`91 Suburban w/35s.G80s don`t stack up to (most) aftermarket "built for off road" traction devises. But,that`s not what they`re designed for.MI use mine, first, before getting out to lock the hubs. It`ll get you out and keep you boots clean.I look at these the way I se auto hubs' use.For the occasional need for extra traction,it`s great.Definately not an off road product.Look at what GM sells as On-Off road tires and you`ll get an idea of what a G80 is good for. They come in 2wds,too.
All this said...when I ordered my`92 K500SRW I got everything I ever wanted on that thing and nothing I didn`t(which was only a couple things).I didn`t order the posi, even though I did order the offroad package and rubber.I put a Detroit Locker in because I use the truck offroad huling alot of weight.
