I'm replacing my rocker panel and after taking my old one off I noticed that part of the front pillar was rusted and gone. I would really like to not replace this piece if it is not necessary so I was wondering if what is rusted out is needed for any support? Would I just be able to clean up what metal is left and POR-15 the remaining and put the new rocker on over?

The configuration has to figure in structurally somehow. You can buy new stampings to replace the rusted-out sheet metal from Tri-Pro or other vendors. They will replace the rusted section from just below the hinge attachment and include the tab for the bottom of the front fender. If you have the expertise to replace the rockers, you should do fine with the bottom of the door posts.

If you are planning on keeping the truck I would replace it or it will come back to Haunt you later, besides if you already have it this far apart it is pretty easy to fix it now instead of later!!!!!!

You definetly need to repair the pillar. It provides extra strength where the fender bolts to it. WES

You will need the following.
Cab pillar
inside kick.
inner rocker
outer rocker.

MAYBE the outside cab support also if its not to bad. I just fixed this on mine. If you havent done this before, it gets REALLY tricky when you replace all 4 of those things at once because you need them to all line up and still do their job....

Kick panel and inner rocker are all solid. Just the bump out piece is rusted. Anyone just fab a new piece for the bump out? Does the rocker get welded to that?

That part is very important since the floor ties in to it, the fender mounts to it, the inner and outer rocker ties into it. Here is a schematic of the structure.

i have the same problem, but my entire kicker panel (was) rusted out all the way to the windshield(pics soon as im finished with repair).the patch parts are really cheap and if you have gotten this far you can do it
