GMC Stepside tailgate identification

Can you help me identify these tailgates. One has the "long M"

I was told these are from 47-55 vintage but am not sure

What year(s) are each and what do these go for? They are both solid with a couple of small holes drilled through the main panel for some reason years back.

Black with the long M

Yellow - smaller GMC script

Re: GMC Stepside tailgate identification

I have a 53 GMC and mine has the yellow tailgate. I believe the black tailgate with the long M is from a 55 plus. I say that because it matches the grill emblem on those years.

It's 55-63, sure about the 55 not 100% on what year they ended. They are high dollar if rust free. I bought a whole trailor to get the correct one for my truck. It looks like a nice one, throw it on ebay with a minimun bid of $50 and see what happens... I have seen ones not as nice go for more than $80.

Re: GMC Stepside tailgate identification

Thanks guys.

So the yellow appears to be '53? Is that one year only?

Re: GMC Stepside tailgate identification

Top one is 55 - 59 at least and maybe into the early 60's. They were very rare and hard to find but are now being reproduced with that script.

I would guess 47-53 for the yellow one.

Re: GMC Stepside tailgate identification

So what do these usually go for? I am not having any luck searching the classifieds here or ebay for anything to reference.

Re: GMC Stepside tailgate identification

I have the yellow one (GMC) on my 49. I bought another one in good shape for 25 on e-bay and I was the only bidder. I figure thats because everybody wants the smooth or chevy ones. but maybe I got lucky??

I believe the top one is 55-62 and the lower one is 47-54.

Re: GMC Stepside tailgate identification

I bought the original gate off of 62 Shortstep`s when he went to a Wideside on his truck.I`m pretty sure the letters changed in`63 when the hoods did.
