Vortec crate motor?

Anyone using GM part number 12530282 replacement engine for 96-02 trucks? It looks like it would work well in one of our trucks. I know the vortecs need a special intake, but what about the water pump, distributer, fuel pump, etc. They are about $2,200 from Scoggin-Dickey.

They don't have provisions for a fuel pump. You'd have to use an aftermarket electric fuel pump. Beyond that, my brain just died.....or farted....whichever makes the thought process go away.

I am running a 350 w/Vortec heads. GM part #12496968 Its fairly priced around $3500-3700 depending on how much you haggle the dealer. Its rated at 330 HP/380 ft.lbs torque. It has HEI distributor, intake, Holley 600 carb, plug wires. Just add alternator,fuel pump,mini starter, headers, or manifolds, and shes ready to fire. They also sell it in a turnkey version for around $4500 or so. I like the motor myself.

Does that one have a roller cam?

The photo on the Summit page looks like there are provisions for a fuel pump. Does the roller cam use a different dist. gear?

i thought they just had a block off plate where the fuel pump goes, unless the cam doesn't have a lobe for that, i don't see how you couldn't run a manual pump.

Usually the boss for the fuel pump is there, but the hole for the push rod is not machined. This is common with the early 90's TBI motors as well.

Also the cams do not have a lobe for the pump. This is a roller cam motor.

Detailed Description
The 350 HO Deluxe takes the value leading 350HO/330HP Crate Engine a step further by adding carburetor, distributor, water pump, torsional damper, and auto trans flexplate.

This enhancement to the Vortec headed 350HO makes it easier than ever to repower your street rod, street machine or sportsman racer.

The 600 cfm vacuum secondary Holley carburetor is ideally suited to the 350HO. And the proven GM HEI distributor will give years of worry-free driving.

With a 9.1:1 compression ratio, it's pump gas friendly, and with its muscle car idle it's cruise night cool.

With GM Performance Part's lowest priced small-block crate engine there is no reason to rebuild that junk yard clunker and since it's complete from carb-to-pan there is no need to chase parts !

The 350 HO is not intended for marine use, and should only be used in 1973 and earlier pre-emissions street vehicles or any year off road vehicles.

Yea, the motor I'm looking is a little different than the H.O. 350. The one I'm looking at has a different cam and a little more compression.

I researched a little more. The H.O. is also a four bolt block. The long block version of the H.O. is about $500.00 more than the other motor. I guess I have a little more to think about.

What if you take a pre 96 or even pre 87 use Vortec heads on a older style short block? With the appropriate intake and decent cam, of course. Basically same thing for a lot less money.

Great idea if you have an existing short block in good shape, but you would still not have a roller cam (eliminates all of the problems of running a flat tappet, non roller high lift cam with the modern oil with no zinc) If someone is starting from scratch, I advise going with the Vortec style engine.

The 86 and up SBC 350 all had provisions for a roller cam so if you can find an 86 up block you could build this motor (a lot better I may add). If you stick with a 86 to about 92 block it should have a mechanical fuel pump capability. If building a motor is beyond your ability, then a crate is the way to go IMO. They also sell an HT383 for 350 replacement in the 96 and up chevy trucks, that would work in an older non-efi application as well.


I personally bought two Vortec 350's for cores and made one a wicked 383 and the other was clean and nice I was able to rering it and put a bigger cam in it with the heads being completely rebuilt and the springs can hang with .600 lift, but only run about .500 lift, so my little rock stocker (sorta) 350 Vortec should scream and the 383, well, that will be a monster. good luck!

i bought a new vortec for my 99 suburban this spring. the block isnt fully machined. the mounting face is there, but there is no hole in the block for the fuel rod. my original engine i pulled out has the block fullly machined for the use of a mechanical pump. they just inserted a plug in the hole.

I was thinking about finding a late model core and having it rebuilt to my specs. I just found this motor on the internet and it seemed like a compromise between rebuilding and the H.O. I think I'll keep looking for a good core and if I can't find one for cheap, I'll look at crate motors again.

So, if I understand correctly, the hydraulic roller cam doesn't have a lobe for a fuel pump. Even if the block is machined for a mech. fuel pump I'd still have to use a elec. pump. The H.O. uses a flat tappet cam. Decisions desicions......

electric inline pumps can be had cheap, if your running a carb you can get a pump for 100$, then get a regulater to put the pressure at the psi you need. there is to many advantages to a roller cam over the flat tappet. dont let the fuel pump be the deciding factor on what engine you buy or build.

That's what I'm thinking. The benefits of the roller cam are way more than the cost of an elec. fuel pump.

I am running a 96' vortec with a carb in my truck. It runs fine on mid grade gas. Water pump is the same as any Gen 1 small block. The timing cover does not have a timing mark, so i put a chrome cover with a pointer. I did change cams to the ramjet 350 cam. It runs great.

i seen in jegs mag they have a carter pump for 70$ that puts 5-6 psi, and they have 1 that is 6-8 psi for 80$. those should work fine with a carb.

that is what I have, the cheap carter. Been working fine for 3 years now.
