`72 Blazer with fiberglass cab enclosure

I saw a `72 Blazer for sale and its got a fiberglass top that encloses the cab behind the factory bucket seats / console and has the rear bench seat out in the open. It almost looks like a truck with this top on! Is that top rare or is it currently available aftermarket?
If you what pictures I’ll swing by and take some.

Re: `72 Blazer with fiberglass cab enclosure

I am pretty sure I know what you are talking about. I was at Pate swap meet back in April and saw one like this. I have pics of it and was going to post this sam question. Unfortunately photobucket is blocked here at work so I cant post the pics of the one I saw right now. The one I saw looked like it was factory it was so well executed, but have never heard of factory half tops. Also what I saw was a removable fiberglass top and not the metal cabbed blazers I have seen on here.

Re: `72 Blazer with fiberglass cab enclosure

There were several aftermarket manufactures of the "half-cab" tops for Blazers. They usually include a steel bulk head that closes off the back of the cab from the bed. You can still find them for sale once in a while. I've seen them go anywhere from $450 to $1,500.

In the past 5-8 years, there were two guys trying to make reproductions. One is gone for sure (http://www.composidyne.com/) but the website for the other is still live - http://www.myrodshop.com/blazer.html

There are a few board members with half tops, including one that has created a retractable hard top half cab.

Re: `72 Blazer with fiberglass cab enclosure

That was one of my Blazer bro's from OK. There were 4 of us, now there are only 3-long story.

He was told that top had been a full top, cut down to be a short top like you see here. I've always had a hard time seeing it that way.

Re: `72 Blazer with fiberglass cab enclosure

Then again, the sides could have been cut and placed together in the back for the rear window enclosure.

Re: `72 Blazer with fiberglass cab enclosure

There are several different types of these tops, i have one that i got a while ago. Most i have seen are fiberglass but the one i got is metal with vinyl inside and aluminum bows that hold the vinyl in place. There is also a serial tag inside but the makers name is too scratched to read. Does any one else have a metal top or are they mostly fiberglass?

Re: `72 Blazer with fiberglass cab enclosure

Brian26, Thats funny that I have pics of your friends blazer. Now that you mention it I could see that top as being a factory one that got shortened (At least in areas). Do you know what they did to fill in the bed area, between the bed and the lower back of the seats? Also was that top removable or was it a permanent top?

It was removeable, but i don't really know how they did the fill in for the rest of the setup. He bought it that way. Afraid the only way I can ask him is to go the State Funded Social Club for felons(if you know what I mean). That'll be his address for a while.

Re: `72 Blazer with fiberglass cab enclosure

Sorry to hear about your friends incarceration. I was looking thru old threads today and there was one on here about a guy building a blazer and it had a top just like your buddies. Must of been an pretty popular aftermarket accessory.

Re: `72 Blazer with fiberglass cab enclosure

I'm having a hell of a time placing pictures here. Yes, I do have a stalled retractable hardtop blazer project and I'd like to get pictures up. I'm using photobucket.

In PB click on direct link and copy the link. Then click on the "insert image icon ( looks like a postcard with a mountain) and paste the link. Bingo

Re: `72 Blazer with fiberglass cab enclosure

It was my dream for 12 years to build these full time. I am so engrossed in working with old race cars right now I have little time to spread this disease.

But I wouldn't mind giving some tips. Sort of a 'hobby away from the hobby ' kind of thing.

Re: `72 Blazer with fiberglass cab enclosure

Yes, you can build one. I did, and I don't even know algebra.

There is windnoise, but oddly the seats never get wet even though I need to close my gaps better.

I started out with the geometry from an old fold out couch! Trick was to get the right one. Did that the first time by luck.
