Some one tried to steal the 72

So I get home from work around 3 A.M today and find the drivers door on my truck hanging open, the wing window busted, and the ignition harness hanging out from under the dash with a screw driver and several jumper wires stuck in it. My local police would not even come out and look at it. Luckily it looks to be an easy fix. I'm just thinking it's an omen from the automotive gods, first the scam and now this, I'm wondering if I should continue with my dream or not. I don't know what kept them from driving off in it. Just venting I'm at a cross roads with this now.

I'd call the town mayor or someone and ask why they didnt even come and look and take a statement. That doesnt work, contact the insurance company and let them know. If its in your driveway call you homeowners.

On the other matter I'd never give in to thieving scum. I know that feeling of being violated like that, sucks bad. Get a hunting camera....about $100.00 at walmart and snag their pictures.

Re: Some one tried to steal the 72

I would disable the truck. Pull the coil wire out or something else not too easy to see. The broken wingvent is why I stopped locking my doors. After eplacing 8 or so windows over the years... I said screw it. The locks aren't keeping them out.
Who ever it was wasn['t too good at what they do... it's REAL simple to hot wire these suckers. I have the burb done inside of 3 or 4 min when my ignition switch locked up. Spent more time cussing at the key trying to get it to turn than I did bypassing the key all together.

Re: Some one tried to steal the 72

Pull the plug on the back of the ignition switch plug it into another and go.It's that simple. The police should come look anyway.Maybe you need to contact the local media and have them discuss it on the air. There might be a few more cops to catch you speeding that way.

Man don't give up! Rig up some kind of security device from an electric fence charger that will totally shock the crap out of anyone (other than you) when they touch the door handle!!

Seriously, I wouldn't give up, and it may be a continuation of the scam thing. Did you find some prints on the screwdriver?

Re: Some one tried to steal the 72

A fuel shutoff switch (can be a manual valve) and or a switch to kill the ignition (hidden toggle switch wired in with somewhat hidden wires) can do wonders to keep a rig from being stolen. The gas shutoff will keep it from getting very far even if they do start it. I used to have one of those manual multi tank valves under the seat from when a po had an extra tank and it was nice to be able to switch it so that the truck would run out of gas in about two minutes if it was started but embarrassing when I had someone with me and forgot to switch it back before starting the truck.
.
If you have to leave the truck for a length of time maybe a piece of vacuum hose in place of the coil wire would be sufficient. With proper coil wire boots on it of course.

Re: Some one tried to steal the 72

The trucks with hei, you don't even have to try to steal them. Cut the one wire from the dist. and jump it to the battery. Then put a screwdriver across the starter solenoid and away you go. This is a fear I have one I get my Blazer going...

Re: Some one tried to steal the 72

Here is my little trick. I pulled the connector for my neutral safety switch and use a jumper to make the connection. With the jumper pulled you have nothing at the starter side of the ignition switch just like it was in gear. I want to put the switch back in line and splice into one side of the wire going to the connector and run that to a hidden switch.

I know this won't stop the pro but it will at least make the thief work a little harder.

I also use a Club and an Airplane Prop Lock I used on my Harley. I wrap it under the seat frame and wrap and I lock it through the steering wheel, and an alarm.

I do want to keep this on, they got my 66 SWB Fleet, may they rot inhttp://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/images/smilies/firedevil.gif.

Re: Some one tried to steal the 72

So what's keeping you from putting it in the garage in your avatar? If it's full of crap, then clean it and store your truck inside of the garage. At least in there, it's semi-safe and if they try to get it......it's considered breaking and entering or burglary......cops gotta come investigate/take reports.

Know what I mean?

Re: Some one tried to steal the 72

69gumby, I did something like what you did. Bought a starter solenoid and installed it between the frame rails so that it's hidden and wired it to a hidden momentary switch under the dash. You would have to look hard to know the heavy gauge wire makes a stop at that solenoid before it goes to the solenoid on the actual starter.

I did this because I can hotwire and start my own truck within 20 seconds by running a wire to the coil like it was said previously, then swinging down below and popping it off with a screwdriver... all without even getting into the truck. Then it's just a matter of breaking a window and driving off.

Doesn't matter what kind of fancy wire fanagling the thief tries, if he can't get the engine to spin over, it won't start. Now if you had a manual tranny, the thief could push start it, but that takes time and work. And they're mostly looking for a quick one.

It's tucked away in the back yard right now, my son was kind enough to loan me a wing window out of his truck. Three other vehicles in the neighborhood were hit as well. We're kind of a couldesac militia right now. Thanks for every ones support.

Re: Some one tried to steal the 72

I got redneck locks on mine as my wife calls em. I ran a plastic coated cable through the door handle and looped ends go to a lock and eye bolt in the front stake slot. I leave it in gear and tires turned one way. I need to get a cable latch installed on the hood release soon. We've had batteries and gas come up missing over the years.
