I am in the process of trying to get hold of one , A friend of mine has a good one and was going to use it in his car but he got a muncie 4spd insted so he is probably gonna let me have the saginaw 3spd overdrive now ,
anyway who has one and how much did it help ?
problem is my 67 has either a .373 or .410 ratio rear gear and it run's it to death out on the highway , it fine for around town but when I go down to TN it's too low , thank's ,,,,,

Exactly. That's the one I was thinking of. These are fairly uncommon apparently. Works good with the 6 cyl.

I have one, and it seems to be very reliable. However, my OD does not work. It has some electrical issues. Parts for the OD seem to be a little scarce, but other than that I would roll it. Especially if it all works.

I just bought a non-synchro o/d unit out of a '55 Chevy truck. I'll need to do some modifications...all of which I don't even know yet, but I'm excited to get it hooked up.

If yours is a fully synchronized version, it's definitely worth something.

let me say this first , MY TRUCK HAS THE 250 SIX CYLINDER ,
I HAVE NEVER HAD ONE OF THESE TRANSMISSIONS ,
HERE IS THE WAY THIS ONE IS SET UP

#1 it has a lever operated with a cable (LIKE A CHOKE CABLE)
#2 it has a vaccum can on it with a hose you hook up to your intake vaccum
#3 it has a PAW ? operated by vaccum that will let it go in overdrive ,
so you will push in the clutch , let off the gas , then pull the cable ?

that is how it look's to me , it look's like it is a sincro trans but I am not sure ,
1st gear may not be sincronized and thats ok , I want to use it whether it is a full sincro or not ,,, can't wait to try it ,

also it look's like and I think it will be a direct bolt in , I don't know of any modification's that will have to be made , I think the driveshaft will even fit ,,

BUT AGAIN I HAVE NOT HAD ONE !!!!!!!!

I have one, but I have no idea if the OD part works. After doing some research and asking around I wouldnt sell it for less than 350 bucks like it sits. So you are getting a smoking deal at free =)

As for operating the o/d, my understanding it's an automatic function based on a cut-in speed, usually around 28-30 mph. The cable you mention (that looks like a choke cable) is actually the lockout mechanism and prevents the overdrive from engaging when pulled out from the dash.

I've never seen one that is vacuum controlled. Not saying there not out there, but evertthing I've read and seen have an electric solenoid and a governor switch. If you can post a few pics of the one you are looking to get, that would be great. I would love to see it and the vacuum controls.

The Saginaws with the o/d are a direct bolt in, no need to modify/change the driveshaft. The trans linkage is the same.
BTW, it will stay engaged in all 3 gears. If you drive with the lever pushed in (engaged) it will be similar to a 4 speed. One fellow told me he never disengages his o/d. One thing you must remember, If you leave it engaged all the time, when you shut the engine off and the trans. is in a forward gear, the trans. is in the freewheel mode and the truck will roll. You will either put in in reverse or set the parking brake. I found that out when I pulled up to the gas pump, shut the engine off, o/d engaged,and got out of the truck. I turned to get the gas nozzle and it started rolling away. I was able to get inside and set the parking brake. Now I just put it in reverse, no matter where I am or whether or not the o/d is engaged.

It is fun to drive and the rpms drop quite a bit when it shifts into o/d.

I will post pic's if and when I get the trans , I really can't comment much on what it doe's or doe's not have , I have never had one so I am just a bit new on them myself
