Post holley question

Does anyone know what would cause a holley no to go strait to fast idle when the engine is started cold. Everything works fine and is adjusted right. The choke closes and the fast idle cam goes up when the choke is set, the choke opens properly but when the engine is started it starts at 1000 to 1400 RPMs and slowly rises to fast idle it usually takes about 3 or 4 minutes on a warm day. Also the fast idle cam is new and I put new gaskets in the carb recently.

There is a adjustment screw mounted on the throttle shaft on the choke side of the carb. Its a pain to get to, but this is what you will need to adjust if indeed your choke fast idle cam is moving up.

Look between the vacuum secondary pod and the choke housing, open the throttle all the way and you will see the lever attached to the shaft. There will be the adjusting screw. Screw it in to raise the idle speed.

The idle speed is set fine but it wont go to fast idle when it is started. I'm positive the fast idle cam set right too.

As the engine warms up it slowly rises to 1800 RPMs. I'm trying to figure out why it does that.

Verify that your engine is running good before adjusting anything on the idle speed....

Sounds like its running rich or lean (need more info)if it is hitting 1800 eventually. Can you lower the cam lever and lower the idle?

I think its a little rich. Yes the cam lever can be lowered. its not stuck or anything. I had the engine rebuilt a few months ago so its not the engine. Its been doing this for over a year now. It worked when i put the carb on but started doing that a couple months later. its very bad in winter, it won't stay running and wants to start at about 400 or 500 RPMs.

After it gets to fast idle you can bring the idle speed down to normal idle and it works fine after that.

When you start the engine (cold) pull the air cleaner off and verify that you have aprox 1/4 of gap(or slightly less) in the choke air valve. If the choke pull-off (located inside teh choke housing) isnt getting vacuum or is damaged, it will cause it to run very rich. If this is the case, try opening the valve with your finger or use a pencil and see if your rpm doesnt raise immediatly

The choke is opening about 1/4". It dosen't raise the idle if it is opened more than that.

Start with the basics:
Make sure base timing is good
verify no vacuum leaks

Sounds like the choke is working like it should, its only an indicator of another problem. If the things I mentioned above are ok and you know for 100% there are no vacuum leaks, there is an internal problem inside the carb (plugged air bleed) causing it to run bad when cold.

Did you also try to close the air valve just a bit to see if it would raise the idel?
Tough to diagnose running problems through a keyboard LOL.

That is normal for cold weather. That is what fast idle is for. It just plain takes a lot more fuel to keep the engine running when it is cold.
