4 Wheelin Tips and Advice

im basically one step away from buying a 1977 Chevy K-10 4WD shortbed which has a factory 350 V-8/TH350/NP203 lifted 4' with 33x12.50R15 and unknown brand custom rims.Im pretty inexpierienced when it comes to 4 wheelin so what kind of tips can you all give me as it pertains to wheelin itself, safety, things to bring, things to look for, etc, etc, etc.anything i should do to prep the truck for wheelin.things like that.

Re: 4 Wheelin Tips and Advice

Rule #1- Never go alone!

Outside of that tow strap, first aid kit, fire extinguisher(s), spare parts and fluids, full size spare tire, tools to do minor repairs, cell phone or CB radio, food and water even if you think it will be a quick trip because one stuck or broke could make it a LONG day.

There could be more or less depending on where you are going and how far away from civilization you are going to be but these basic will help you out of most jams.

Re: 4 Wheelin Tips and Advice

avoid wheeling at night and take a current detailed map. in '92 I had an 83 K5 with a built 6.2 when I was stationed in Ft. Benning GA. a little voice in the back of my head told me to not "go for it" across the little stream so I went to check the map of the old tank trails where I was. good thing I stopped. it was the Chatahoochie River (sp).

Re: 4 Wheelin Tips and Advice

Yep never go alone. Always take extra fluids n basic tools for doing stuff. Spare tire, jack, shovel, food water n sleeping bags in case spend the night lol. Flash lights are always good make sure to have matches or lighter as well. Come along as well the cheap winch they have saved my bacon more then once oh yea and some chains. Be safe and have fun, try to get some pics as well

Re: 4 Wheelin Tips and Advice

ill for sure stick to the easy stuff at first until i get more comfortable with 4 wheelin maybe stick to a camping trip or something near where my dad lives there is alot of mountain type terrain around him so im sure something for the inexpierienced 4 wheeler can be found.so when i take my first venture out i should bring basic tools, spare parts, matches or lighter, sleeping bag, changes of clothes(warm depending on where ya go),extra food and water, spare tire and jack of some kind, shovels, flashlights, tow straps, first aid kit, come along, tire chains, winch if possible,a detailed map thats current and dont go alone.sounds like good advice so far.

Cannot be said enough!

If there's a club (or a group of weekend warriors) near you, see if they'll let you tag along. You'll not only learn from folks who know what they're doing, you'll have plenty of help for when things go bad.

And things will go bad...

Re: 4 Wheelin Tips and Advice

one thing i will look into for sure is putting a cb radio in it.i do have a cell phone but i would feel better knowing a backup option was there just incase.a friend of mine has alot of cb stuff including radio's,antenna's,etc he was big into cb's for awhile and as a result collected alot of stuff for both home and car setups.he kept trying to get me to put one in my oldsmobile but i didnt think it was necessary so i declined.however they seem more appropriate in a truck especially a 4 wheeler.anyone on here have any tips for things regarding cb's i dont know a whole lot about them either.joining a 4x4 club that sounds like a good idea to gain knowledge about 4 wheelin.ive honestly never been 4 wheelin in my life.only been camping and fishing in the mountains as far as outdoor activities go.

Yea dont go alone cant be said enough the only times that ive been "stuck" is when I was by mysylef. LOL

Pretty much the basic things youll need. Dont forget a highlift jack they will save your ass countless times. Stuff will break thats just part of off roadin

Remember: If your not breaking Sh*t then your not pushing it hard enough
