Question Installing tail light trim-where do I drill holes?

I'm installing 69-72 tail light trim on a truck that didn't originally have it and I don't want to screw it up. Does someone have a diagram that shows how and where to drill the holes for the clips?

Re: Installing tail light trim-where do I drill holes?

You and I are in the same boat. I'm going to install uppers, lowers, tailgate and tail light moldings on a 69 SB that never came with them.

My best bet has been wrecking yards for the cab hole placement's, but finding a SB has yet to happen..... even finding a LB with moldings is tough.

If you do find some info. on this, please post or let me know?

ttt

Here's a pic, if it helps. It's from my 68, but IIRC the hole placement is the same on all of them. I think the little holes are from the PO trying to keep the old ones in place after they fell off.

Thats awesome!! What are the chances of you having pics of the tailgate molding holes or even the bed side molding holes??

Rookie here, what does IIRC stand for?

Thank you......

Re: Installing tail light trim-where do I drill holes?

The easiest method that I found is to take a water based marker vis a vie or similar and first mark the location of the retainers for clips on the trim pieces. Lay the pieces in position and make a small mark on the bed, centering the two marks you made on the trim. Remove the trim and center the the mark in the tailight area and drill approx. 4 5/16 holes and the appropriate sized holes for the two retaining screws located on the inboard side of the trim. Install your clips and press into place. I used this method on my 4x4's new sides and had 0 problems. take your time and measure twice. I did mine with a three year old helping and it turned out great. Hope this helps- oh be sure to limit the depth of the drill bit as you drill, if you go too far you could puncture the bedside.

Re: holes for the rest of the bed.

The rest of my truck bed molding holes would not be the same. I believe it's only the tailight holes and maybe the tailgate that are going to be similar. They made some changes on the side molding after '68.

On mine the side molding follows the contour of the wheel well like the one pictured below.

Re: Installing tail light trim-where do I drill holes?

Wow! Thanks for all the excellent responses. I've been running around for quite awhile with just the upper tailgate trim in place. Hopefully I'll get around to doing this today.

Re: Installing tail light trim-where do I drill holes?

Ok, I drilled 5/16" holes and tried to put the trim on and totally mangled it and bent it all up! It looks like 3/8" or bigger holes would have worked better but I don't want to drill too big if it's supposed to be 5/16". This sucks. Now I've got to buy a whole new set of trim. I need some help here guys.

Re: Installing tail light trim-where do I drill holes?

Manual calls for 11/32" holes (aftermarket clips maybe need bigger holes). Did you get my PM?

Re: Installing tail light trim-where do I drill holes?

It looks like the best way to put the bezel on is to attach the clips first and then press it all on to the fender? I did that with the 5/16" holes and bent the crap outta the bezel. I'll drill the holes out to 11/32" and try it again. These bezels are like working with soft, malleable lead-they bend if you look at them funny!
