disc brake swap

i am changing from 67 drums up front to 73-87 drop spindles and disc brakes. i have the spindles and ball joints on and now i need to do the tie rods. i guess i use 73-87 outers and 67 inners? which tie rod adjusting sleeves? there are so many to pick from. what is the best combo?

call Jeff at Classic performance parts. I believe they have conversion tie rods.

Re: disc brake swap

You need:
'73-'87 outers, and '67-70 outers (to use in the place of the inners so the threads will be opposite LH and RH),...

and some adjusting sleeves that have 11/16" threads on one end (the 73-87 tie rod end),... and 5/8" threads on the other end, (67-70 tie rod end).

Www.PerformaneOnLine.com sells the "conversion" adjusting sleeves.
This is how I know,... (my '69 disc brake swap)

Not a wise idea to weld together steering components. Spend a few bucks and get the conversion sleeve so you know the piece won't come apart on you when you are driving down the road.

Re: disc brake swap

yeah, after i posted it, i wished i could have erased it. also $50 for the conversion sleeves isnt bad, and it would cost me 40 for the stock parts anyway.

Re: disc brake swap

another question: i bought a 77 brake booster/master cyc./prop. valve from junkyard. couldnt find good brake lines. where can i get brake tubing to use from the 77 prop. valve to 73-87 soft lines? or should i try to use the factory location for the prop. valve and use the 77 prop valve there? the faq threads are great, but i couldnt narrow it down.

Re: disc brake swap

Any Kragen/O'Reillys will have a good supply of flared brake tubing with the nuts on them. Just bend it yourself. If you need to, you can one end off, add a different size nut and re-flare it.

I have 2.5" drop spindles and 3" (Summit brand) drop springs from Summit Racing.
They are actually Ground Force springs in a Summit Racing box.

The 67-72 a-arms will work with the later 73-87 ball joints.
No need to swap the entire arm,... unless you just want to.

Actually my drop spindles are for 71-72 trucks. (Swap meet item for $100)

It's cheaper to just buy the drop spindles for the correct year of truck you are putting them on. Then there is no need to change balljoints OR tie rod ends.
I wish I would have done that. It would have been much cheaper in the long run. (just the tie rod adjusters are $50/pair)
