Hood won't pop up.

As long as I've owned this truck, I've had to release the latch with one hand and help the hood up with the other. The hood springs pull it up once I get it started and they hold it up fine. I'm wondering why it won't pop up when I release the latch. Any thoughts?

Re: Hood won't pop up.

Make sure the hood hinges are lubed and adjust the stops so that there is some pressure on the hood. Also, make sure the alignment pin is not binding.

Weak springs. I replaced my hood hinges and springs and there was a big difference. Hood pops right up now.

Re: Hood won't pop up.

You could also try "tensioning" the springs by loosening the hinge bolts and pushing up the hood and re-tighten the bolts. Adds a little extra lift to the spring action.

Re: Hood won't pop up.

Lubricating everything was the first thing I did. If I help the hood up to the first stop (where it's not fully latched, but not fully released) and then pull up on the latch again, it goes up the rest of the way with no trouble. It's just getting it from fully latched to "popped up" that that's the problem. I will try and adjust the stops and see if that helps. The alignment pin doesn't seem to be binding.

That is completely wrong. All it will do is effect the height of the back of the hood when it is closed. It does nothing to the springs at all. The spring is contained with-in the hinge itself and is a completely independent unit.
The hood springs have nothing to do with the initial opening of the hood, they just hold it open.

Re: Hood won't pop up.

i'd also try to loosen the latch and striker on both the core support and hood to see if there is a slight misalignment causing it to bind that little bit//could b off by 1/8inch or so and cause that slight hangup

with cdowns on this. I think the locator pin on the hood is hanging up.

As the wise man once said: "Opinions are like a$$holes. Everyone has one and they all stink."
I had the same issue with the 71 and got that advice on this board. Tried it, and guess what? It worked.

Re: Hood won't pop up.

Facts are not opinions.
Someone told you wrong and maybe that adjustment fixed the bind of the latch pin by coinsidence.
Adjusting the hinge mounting points has absolutely nothing to do with "Tensioning" the springs...which cannot be done anyway.
If the springs are worn, they need to be replaced, but all they do is draw the hinges together. This holds the hood up, it does not "pop" it from the latched position. It they did the hood would raise by itself when you unlatched it.

Re: Hood won't pop up.

When I unlatch my hood it raises by itself. New springs and hinges.

Re: Hood won't pop up.

I've got the same problem with my 72. I do need to use more lubrication, that's been the least of my worries with it right now. But it is aggravating, I just recently replaced the hood with another one because the inner brace the hoodlatch mounts too was rusted out.
The problem is still there so still need to figure it out.

Re: Hood won't pop up.

I adjusted the pin and now the hood pops enough to get it open with no trouble. The hood does seem to vibrate or "oilcan" more when I'm idling than it did before, but that's another issue. Thanks guys!!!!

Re: Hood won't pop up.

This is an old thread... but my 69 C10 had the same issue. My Fix was replacing (installing) the side hood bumpers I got from LMC. I bought my C10 3 months ago and the hood issue has been driving me nuts - LMC -30-1829
