Newbie needs truck help

Im a learning mechanic and Im lookin at a 76 K10 and it has a dieseling problem and I was wondering what would cause this and what can I do to correct the problem? also how hard it is to replace cab mounts? and lookin at this truck the springs in front where the shackle goes to the spring is rubbing the frame is this normal? I got alot of questions Thanks

Dieseling is normally too high idle or a timing issue. On occasion, an electrical feed back when using electrical fans.

Cab mounts are easy to replace if you have a big enough floor jack.

I have also heard it can be slack in the timing chain. is this possible? thanks

GM used nylon gears on timing chains. When the nylon breaks, the timing chain is shot! It happend to my old 305. Timing chain failure finally did in the engine. I would start with checking the timing and tuning the carb. Use a vacuum gauge to tune it.

I don't see a timing chain causing it, either the idle is too high or the timing is wrong, usually it's the idle.

Also I was driving it around and speedo cable must be broke and when I stopped and started the truck It was sounding like the battery was dead but I stopped and cranked the truck over and it started right up and the starter wasent cranking slow. Any ideas and how hard to replace cable?

huh? speedo cable being broke caused it to die or you shut it off? how the crap can it sound like a battery dead? if it's running? Need to clear things up a little better please in order for us to help you.

I noticed the speedo wasent workin so Im guessin the speedo cable is broken. I pulled the truck over and shut it down and when I went to start it was acting like the battery was dieing because the starter was crankin slow. but when we got back to the sellers place and shut the truck down and he went and started it and the starter wasent actin sluggish and cranked over right away. Is it a starter problem? I hope I clarified the problem because I really dont know how to describe it.

Carbon buildup in the cylinders can also cause dieseling.

go back to nylon gears,in the timing chain,this is what i was told why my timing never seemed right ,in mine it cracked the gear pulled a strip of 4 or 5 teeth off but it was still attached,(couldn't see the crack till tension turned off chain, after removing timing cover,replaced with real steel ,drove the engine for a long time after

I decided against the truck sadly its a good deal if I had the extra cash to put into parts

As for slow cranking of the starter that can be casued by having the dist. too far advanced.

when any of mine have dieseled its always been the timeing for me. usually too advanced but I also retune my carbs anytime i change timing so could have been that too i guess.
