guage cluster

I have been looking for a guage cluster with tach for my 86. I want one from a 80 model or later. If anyone has them installed I sure would like to see pics because I have only heard of these never seen one.

Wow, I was unaware they even offered a tach in 87. That makes me want.

Re: guage cluster

Sorry for the double post, but wanted to bring it back up. I did some reading today and found this:
Quote:
87 EFI trucks, 87-91 Blazers/Suburbans: Cannot install tachometer cluster because of speed sensor (VSS) feedback needed for the factory EFI computer and ABS brakes (90-91).
So... Now I'm wondering how a tach got into an 87 as Keith has. Seriously, I want. Any and all information will be appreciated!

Re: guage cluster

I don't think they came factory, but you can put one in even with the VSS, but requires some wiring work.

If you don't have the 91 with VSS, but a 90 and older, it's a plug and play. I put a cluster from a 79 in my old 87, but used the 87 speedo. Worked/looked like factory, save for the white overlay.

Re: guage cluster

randy, no difference for an 87 TBI, tach feed is off separate coil on back of intake instead of the HEI cap.

try this link but it is wrong about the 87- hopefully jeff will catch this, i wrote most of that info for him a long time ago.
http://www.73-87.com/7387garage/inte...achometers.htm

AGAIN- there are 4 distinctly different units for the years.
73-75
76-77
78-79 - plug-n-play in 80 up also if you like the 100 MPH speedo.
80-87 - yes in 80 not 81 they changed the font.

and AGAIN 90% of the sellers on ebay have no idea what they fit and what they will cause a dash fire in by mixing them up. crossy

Re: guage cluster

Is why I rang you a PM Crossy, the article said you were the man to know. Now, the hunt is on. Thank you very much for chiming in!

What about a cluster out of a 77, would it work for the 87?

Keith ordered that truck new , worked at GM , I think followed it down the assembly line , etc . I remember him stating that he ordered it with the tach even though most consider 81 the last year . I think the inside connection and knowledge of the right RPO is what got him the factory installed tach in an 87 . The 80 up tachs are fairly rare . I only have one cluster that is 80 and up. I have several of the older years and one 78 tach that would be considered NOS in the condition it is in . Look in the Blazers and duallysat the salvage yards for a tach . That has been the best place for me so far .

Re: guage cluster

Yeah '82 was the last year for a factory installed tach in the squarebodies UNLESS YOU HAD KEITH's line of connections as stated above.

I've got a tach installed in my '91 Suburban as well

See how I went about doing it on the link in my signature below

Re: guage cluster

Wow BLE 'BURBAN, that's nice. A bit more work than I want to do, but your end result is awesome. I thought I read that the tachs out of those large trucks would not work in the 1 ton and downs, maybe that is why neither of your other two tachs worked right? But still, awesome looking cluster there.
