I would check the fuel lines on top of the tank. They deteriorate over time, and that could be the cause of your smell. This is assuming that you have checked for fuel leaks under the hood first.

Re: need some help

I concur with Jonboyl. I just replaced the sending units on both tanks and the rubber hoses between the tank and hardlines (3 different sizes of short lengths) were all rotted. I used new hose and clamps. It is a PITA to get to them - but I have a dump box conversion so I just lifted the box to get at them - otherwise, I think you have to drop the tanks.
Of course, you could be leaking gas under the hood - like at the carburetor - which happens with my stock Quadrajet. However, replacing the soft lines at the tanks fixed most of the problem for me. Good Luck.

Re: need some help

I would think that you have a fuel leak or you carb is flooding. Not sure what type of carb you have, but holley carbs tend to leak out of the throttle shaft. The charcoal canister can cause strong gas fumes as well.
