Cant find any of my LMC catalogs..

I have the horn button, a metal plate with 3 holes in it, a redish plastic ring with 3 holes and 3 screws,am I missing something? horn works if I touch lil button to steering column (ground it out) but if I try to put it together all it does is ground out and BEEEEEEEEPPPPPP lol

Is there a spring or something to make it come back?

Anyone have a pic or explaination or diagram how it goes back (correctly) lol thanks

i beieve the flat metal piece acts as the spring?

i looked this up for ya

the flat metal piece is the spring and if put in backwards the horn will sound all the time.

I just got my horn working after lots of trial and error. You should have a round metal disk (about 2" dia) that is slightly convex , a round metal "cup" (about 2 1/2" dia x 1 tall) (part #7 on Hubscrubs drawing), a plastic ring (about 2" dia) with 3 screw retainers (part #8 on Hubscrubs drawing) and 3 screws. As shown in the drawing, first thing on the steering wheel hub is the plastic ring, then the flat disk, then the cup. The screw retainers from the plastic disk point up and go though the disk, then the cup. The horn button snaps right on to the cup. As Fuzzy mentions above, the convex disk has to be right side up or the horn won't shut off. You have to experiment with the right amount of torque on the screws - too much and the horn won't shut up - too little and the button will be way loose. A great piece of advice I got here when I was having fits with mine - leave the battery disconnected while you're experimenting. Good luck.

The only problem with the LMC catalog is that it is wrong. In the box (#6) the plastic part, #8 actually goes inside the metal cup, #7. There is a thread on it. I will see if I can find it.

Actually the disk goes in first (curved side up) then the cup then the plastic retainer.

Be sure to note how the parts come out, especially the flat metal disk. It is not flat, it has a slight dish to it. It goes in with dome up. Also, the metal cup has a notch in it that matches a tab on the rubber part of the horn button, so it has to be installed in a certain position or the horn button will be off center.

The large plastic piece with the spring loaded contact goes under the steering wheel and the contact tower sticks up through a hole in the steering wheel hub. The disk is the first piece to go inside the steering wheel, then the metal cup, then the plastic retainer with the three screws. If you hold the metal cup in your hand and put the retainer down inside it you will see that the bosses on the plastic retainer fit snug inside the holes in the cup. Turn that assembly upside down and put the metal disk on it and you will see that the holes in the disk just fit over the bosses on the retainer also. That is the way it has to go together. It can be tough getting it all lined up down inside the steering wheel and keeping the metal disk in place. If the disk gets out of place and gets pinched between the steering wheel hub and the retainer, either the horn won't honk or it will honk all the time.

This is one of those procedures that is hard to put into words but fairly easy to do so I hope you can follow my rambling....

Ok, thanks doc, I think i'll figure it out, sounds hard, I just needed to know if I have all the parts or not. So I have all the parts, now just need the 'know how' which I have, but dont 100% understand, but will figure it out!

Now that I think about it, I thing Doc's got it right on. I think the diagram threw me. I didn't have that random spring either.

OK, Still not getting it..All the pieces pictured above is everything I have, thats everything I need, right?

Are the washers factory too? I couldnt get anything and put disc with dome up then plastic ring with stud things pointing up then metal cup, (like a kitchen bowl would be) that part up so the milk would stay in lol

it soudns all the time no matter what, dad thinks im missing something?

Domed Washer, metal cup, then the plastic piece, then the three screws. The feet on the plastic piece should line up and go through the metal cup. The screws with washers go through the plastic piece. This is the way I think it assembles based on the instructions above.

That is wrong... Disk with dome up, metal cup, then plastic ring with studs pointing DOWN. Then put screws in and just snug them up. Look down around the outside of the cup and see if the metal disk has about the same amount showing all the way around. You have to be sure that the studs on the plastic ring are down THROUGH the metal disk and not on top of it...

You have all of the correct pieces in your picture minus the spring.. Has the steering wheel been off of it?

I don't think the washers are factory but I don't know what they would hurt...

There is no spring. That's why I said minus the spring... Here is a picture of all the parts. The part at the top left goes under the steering wheel.

I have taken a lot of them apart and I have never seen one put together like that. I saw your post but I didn't comment because I don't specifically remember taking a '72 apart and thought maybe something changed in '72, since that doesn't appear to be an LMC image. I don't think so though... I am going to go out this morning and try putting one together that way and see how it looks. I can't see how the metal cup could be down tight doing it that way. Stay tuned!!

OK, it absolutely will not work if put together like the LMC catalog or the pic KEL posted in his other thread.

The first picture below is a '67 wheel that to the best of my knowledge has never been taken apart. The second picture is my original, unmolested '70 camper truck wheel. As you can see the plastic ring is inside the cup. The easiest way to install the parts is with the steering wheel off but is not really necessary if you are careful. It can be tough to get the studs on the plastic retainer through the holes in the metal disk because it wants to slide down. You may have to take a small screwdriver and push the metal disk up from the bottom after you have the screws snugged up to get it in place. When you have all of the parts installed and you push on the edge of the metal cup it should push down a little bit, it should not be solid. If it is solid or the horn honks when you hook the battery back up the studs are on the disk and not through it.
