Squares from other countries

A recent post on a C10 from Mexico reminded me of the differences of the '73 and up square bodies. I remember some having smaller vertical taillamps in Mexico. Here are a couple from other countries...

I believe this '77 is from Argentina. Notice the tailgate and small taillamps. It is described as having a rebuilt 100 horse Borgward VM 492 Turbo Diesel.

Here is an '88 "Hunter" model from Mexico. Notice the flat bedside toward the back. The taillamps were not square. They were thin, vertical lamps and were only visible from the rear.

Here's a '75 from Argentina. The owner claims it is all original down to the tires and shocks. He even has the original bill of sale.

No offense to the owners of those but the small tail-lights and the 88 with the flat lower bed just looks ridiculous...looks really out of place

Yeah, they look odd but that's how they came from the factory there.

Re: Squares from other countries

I understand why they keep old body styles longer in other countries...but why the different lights and tailgate? Seems like it would be cheaper just to make them the same? I kinda like that foreign style tailgate.

Interesting, I've never seen those tailgates and tail lights before. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Squares from other countries

It looks like the truck in post #6 has the key on the dash like pre-1968 GM products. Odd.

Cool stuff. I noticed that too. Like the older looking pedals, the key is on the dash rather than on the column, 6 lug wheels. I kind of like those tailgates.

They all have amber park lights too. As opposed to just 73-74 like ours.

It also has a lot of warning lights across the top, kind of like the diesels but with a few more.

As I was looking at these, I was thinking the same thing... Why would GM spend money to re-engineer things and then build different tooling, etc? Is it a spend money for the sake of spending money deal or does the south american market really demand those weird subtle differences.

I mean I guess I can see VNT laws in different countries requiring different lighting, but GM's reasoning behind the bed and interior changes have me vexed.

If you guys think the taillamps on these models are odd, wait till you see a photo of the Mexican models like that '88 Hunter. VERY weird looking. I'm still trying to find a photo to share.
