Steering Column help! - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hey guys, we are replacing a non-tilt column with a tilt column in my brother in laws 78' blazer. I am wanting to know if any had any ideas as to my dilema. The plastic rotating sleeve that the shift indicator rotates to on the column is cracked, and could fall apart leaving he tab unable to rotate to anything, are these the same as a non tilt column? It is the plastic sleeve just below where the gauge cluster goes, and while the tilt is out of the vehicle, if I need to replace it, I would rather do it now than later. It is also missing one of the 4 tabs that lock it into the bottom of shift lever metal area, is that going to be an issue? Thanks Trevor

Trevor, I changed mine to tilt. It was an automatic trans colunm (floor shift) going into a stick shift truck so I had to break the colunm down and swap over the parts to make it look right and function. I had to use parts from 3 different colunms to get it right, Lord only knows why, I forgot now. I do have what I know to be the lower shift bowl from the automatic colunm (thats the part you need) It's complete with nothing broken. As far as cross fitting the lower bowls from tilt to non tilt I think that will work, BUT, I'm not 100% sure. You would have to visably compair the 2 of them side by side. The broken tab you speak of will be an issue, but seeing as this part is more or less buried in the dash you can use some glue to hold it where the tab is broken off. To my knowledge, the lever housing (where the indicator clips on to) is different from tilt to non tilt, I am not sure on what years though. Seems the 83/84 and up columns are different, and the 77 to 84 are by themselves too. Columns are a dime a dozen around here, with the "wobble" being the only real issue in most, which is an easy fix. Heck I have one in my 89 parts suburban that I'm not going to remove, and it don't even have the wobble.
I know you're up a little ways in KS, but I'd give it to you if it would help you at all, you'd just have to come get it.

Almost 2 years of work, but it was really worth the effort. Little stuff left to do is mount winch, wet sand & buff out and build belly pan\running boards. Body work takes lots and LOTS of beer!!!!
