Have any of you done this? I think this is the route I'm going to go with....I know it's probably impractical because you could remove the engine and save trouble but I really don't want to to that....I found this link on how to do it without removing the engine....just wondering if anyone else has any input on that.....

Looks good. It'll work fine, I've done it before. Only tip I can think of is the more stuff you remove for painting, like firewall stuff, etc, the more detailed it will look.

Degrease the engine bay before you start and then again after you take off the stuff you're going to take off so none of the parts you want to remove will be hiding greasy spots later.

I would add that if you are going to pressure wash, rent a heated one.

Otherwise, go for it. I'd say it is easer than removing the engine. The one in the link looked awesome.

I painted the firewall with the engine installed.

After paint.

Did this without removing engine. Well, removed the intake and the whole front of the engine to paint it all...but you get the idea. New wire loom and all.

I know its not a 73-87 but its the same concept. Had to scrub everything and then paint it all satin black....was a huge job

Great post! Hope to start the process myself come this Turkey-day week-end. Appreciate your research.

Going by all I've heard it basically is elbow grease and getting down and dirty. Then get it clean...and then clean it again and probably again before thinking about making it pretty.

Nice to see the before and afters for motivation.

Definitely do-able. That's what I just did to mine. Click below on my build thread to see the details. I did it on a '65 Impala I used to own and as very happy with the results. I'm far from finished but I'm going to get there.
