coolant temp sensor

This is a pretty lame question but what coolant temp sensor are you using with a factory gauge. I went to 3 parts stores and all they had was a updated style. They have no info on how to update it tho. I want to get one for the motor i am building. The new one they are trying to sell me is the one with the plastic connector and the one with the flat thing on the end looks like the one in my truck. Not saying it is the right one tho. My gauge only goes 1/4 of the way up. Have changed gauge and it says same thing. Just want to get the right one.

Re: coolant temp sensor

Have you tried looking up an older engine? The one you're describing that you need is the same on my truck, and it's a '75. But then, my buddy's '91 camaro has that style, too.

Re: coolant temp sensor

Did you check on the shelves over by the aftermarket gauges? Sunpro uses senders with the nut on the end of them, so you'd just have to crimp a hole-ended connector on your wire instead of the slide-on connector. I know the gauges come with them, but I'd think you could get a sender separately.

Re: coolant temp sensor

The parts stores in my town realy suck. The patrs guy at pepboys found like 10 different ones but i did not know if the resistance was the same or if they are all the same. I would like to use the one with the plastic connector if i can find info on it.

Re: coolant temp sensor

Did you tell them you need the one for the guage? That one with the plastic end is oval shaped like it has more than one conductor in it. IIRC that is the kind the computer needs, and not the type the guage needs. Newer trucks like my 87's have both types.

Re: coolant temp sensor

I got one. Went to abc. I think that was the problem the hole time. But my truck did not come with a computer so i dont know why it has one listed. looks just like the one with spade connector
