Like I needed another one of these things....

Picked this Hefty Smurf next to the border in Texas yesterday.... (Border Patrol was highly confused)

Mostly rust free, orig color. Needs rockers and some kick panel work. I may pop the 6.0 from my 2002 2500HD in it and make a shop truck.

Here it is before any cleaning or repairs have been done. Wish me luck.

Truck in the Garage is my roommate's '68 SWB - we are currently in a race to see who's driving daily first. He's currently battling a rusty interior roof panel and needs someone to weld in a replacement panel.... Suggestions?

Re: Like I needed another one of these things....

Spent the day farting around on the Smurf. Located some parts laying around, Pressure washed the engine bay and underneath, wet sanded some of the oxidation off, swapped to some less crappy wheels, changed the oil.

Anyone near Austin have a gently used front bumper and driver's eyebrow for a GMC?

Lookin' better!

Re: Like I needed another one of these things....

Picked up some parts from a "cut to bits mid 70's 2x4 blazer" this week - Today I dropped the rear with a 2" shackle, re-welded some exhaust parts, scrapped the front suspension and replaced it with my new parts - disc brakes, stainless lines, new shocks, 2" drop shackles, (i cut the springs one coil also) and a few other odds and ends. It was along day. Things are looking a little more hotrod. This week I'll have some rotors drilled 6 lug to get back to my turbines.

Next up, sway bar, steering stabilizer, remove leafs to match front and then get some rust repair panels patched in.

Re: Like I needed another one of these things....

Heh, too bad it can't backup the look right now.... We'll get there but the current th350 is a real piece of caca. I remembered today that I have a Edelbrock EFI system sitting in a crate next to a built 700r4 that also lost it's home. Maybe I'll skip the 6.0L swap, add some Vortec heads, that 700r4 and injection system. Keep it simple(ish).

Looking good, you work fast! I would say the 700r4, heads and EFI sounds good.

Re: Like I needed another one of these things....

Last night I swapped the rear axle and pulled out the bottom 3 leafs. I needed the 5-lug and wanted to lower the rear few inches. To my dismay, even with shorter tires, removing the bottom 3 leaves only gave me 1" drop (31" at the top of the wheel well before and 30" after). Looks a little better but it just doesn't add up. I expected more from all that friggin' work.....

Good lookin Smurf. It was way too tall. Did that 2wd blazer front end have dropped spindles by chance? That's a lot of drop for 1 coil cut. I like the slight rake it has now.
If you haven't already you should check out Dieselarmy13's build thread. His 72 GMC started out looking much like yours. He also has a leaf spring rear.

Re: Like I needed another one of these things....

Looks good! You could always put the leaves back in and do an axle flip to get some more drop out of the rear...either that or swap to coils like I'm in the process of doing now.

Re: Like I needed another one of these things....

Thanks for the support guys. I'm having fun with this project - trying to get it done quick and dirty.

Other progress this weekend included tearing all of the wiring apart and undoing the hacks POs had done over the years. Good thing I pulled the driver fenderwell because the main lead was melted the entire way up to the firewall. Took the better part of the day to get that done but now I can say the headlights work! WooHoo!

I happened to have a blue automatic column sitting around so I slapped that in there along with the "chevette" steering wheel I recovered from the trash. I kinda dig it after I pulled apart the horn button and covered the chevette emblem with some aluminum tape - see sideways pic.

I have another 5 days sitting in my padded cell waiting for truck time. Who knows what I'll have delivered in time for next week!

I'm not sure the raked stance is for me. I might have to do a flip and airbags in the rear at some point.

Re: Like I needed another one of these things....

Yeah, Boog - they are 2.5 drop spindles but unfortunately the 1" rotor version so I had to convert the whole friggin thing to 5 lug and ditch my sweet western turbines. GRRR!

I can tell you that the gopher mounds in the pasture out here are tagging the lower A-Arms and making a big mess in under the hood without fenderwells. Any lower and it wouldn't even make it out to the road. #trapped
