Uncle Eds 71 GMC

I have been itching to work on something, so I started poking around on the web when I came across this terrific site. I have been lurking around for the past few weeks and can't stop reading. Sounds like a great group of guys and the amount information is unbelievable.

My wifes grandfather bought the GMC new back in 71 (have bill of sale and all paperwork). He drove it until the early 80s and passed it along to my wifes uncle. Uncle Ed drove the truck until 02 when the 292 with around 400K on it gave up and died. The truck was then passed to me and has been sitting, waiting its turn to be put back on the road. The GMC is a 71 with a 292 and 3 speed on column. Discs up front and drums out back and no power anything. It has the usual rust in cab corners doors and rockers. The custom spray paint was applied by my oldest son, who was 7 at the time, while I was not paying attention to him. I am replacing the tired 292 with a running 305/350 combination I have on hand (trying to go low budget). A axle flip for the rear and lowering springs for the front. I have been collecting patch panels for a few years but will still have to find a few parts. I have a 69 chevy longbed that was given to me for parts (not much good on the body)but has an automatic and power brakes.

Started stripping the truck this week and hope to pull the engine, trans and bed this evening. I will try to keep updates posted as the truck progresses.

Welcome from Central florida....this forum is the best, some very smart people in here. If you haven't done it yet spend the $25 so you can buy and sell parts here, it will be the best money you ever spend on your truck.
That's a great truck with a good story and the paperwork too.
Good luck on your project!

Welcome from Maryland! I can't wait to see wait you do with it. We have a member here from Chesapeake,VA who restored a Dark Green 6cyl/manual SWB Stepside (Chevy,I believe '70) to all original. It came out real sharp.

Re: Uncle Eds 71 GMC

Thanks for the warm welcome. I took the doghouse off and stripped the interior. Found a lot more rust in the floor than I thought. I will have to pick up a floor pan. The left front fender appears to be off a chevy and the hood has a lot of bondo from a previous repair. But I have not seen anything that can't be fixed.

Re: Uncle Eds 71 GMC

Finally found time to do a little more work. Got the truck inside so the rain and darkness will have less of an effect on the progress. I removed everything from the cab and am ready to lift it off the frame this weekend. Then I can get it cleaned up and start with the rebuild.
Thanks for looking

Welcome from the other side of the mountains in east TN. That looks like quite the project. Have fun and enjoy bulding it. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Re: Uncle Eds 71 GMC

Pulled the bed, glass and dash today. Found more rust, a few holes under the front and rear window seals. Rust in the heater box and the rust below the rear widow. Not sure this cab is worth fixing.

Scored a set of Rallys for $50, 2 center caps $10, and a hood for $60. Was a pretty good day at the swap meet.

Re: Uncle Eds 71 GMC

Finally got some work today. My brother came by and helped me and son pull the engine and trans out of the parts truck today. Removed the brake booster, auto column and engine mounts and cross members. Hope to finish stripping the truck tomorrow. Not much left on the parts truck that isn't rusted or broken.
