84 k10 GMC swb, "Big Red"

Well I decided its time for a new project!

Ever since I was little I wanted a Swb chevy, lifted huge. After recently selling my cummins dodge, I decided id have what I always wanted.

After a craigslist search, I ran across an 84 gmc k10, that looked rough in the poor pictures. After speaking on the phone with the guy, we agreed on a price and I set off to go get it, 160 miles away. Upon arrival I realized I had struck gold!

Although it had a spray bomb primer paint job, it had absolutely zero rust, and 78,xxx miles! After exchanging money I drove off, the truck made the journey home without a hitch.

After doing some research I found that the truck was bought by a ranch in arlington, then was bought last year and moved to waco.

My plans are a red paint job, black interior, 10 inch lift, rolling on 38x15.5 swamper radials.

Here's pics of the truck when I got it

Im now lookin for a ten inch lift, anyone got one?

Also, what would You give for this truck? What's it worth?

Enjoy

There is a 12" lift in the classifieds? 2" more inches always helps if you get in a deep hole.

Re: 84 k10 GMC swb, "Big Red"

those 10 bolts are gonna cry all night long after looking at those 38s....

You might look into a 3/4 ton swap, at minimum a 6 lug semifloating 14 bolt...

I plan on taking it easy with the 10 bolts, ill upgrade gearing and axles when money permits, right now I just want to get it up in the air so I stay interested!

mall crawling they should be fine for a while, depending on gearing it might be a dog off the line though! Goodluck. Project sounds interesting.

Re: 84 k10 GMC swb, "Big Red"

For right now it'll be a chick magnet/pretty truck. Later it will evolve.

I found a NTWonline suspension special that looked decent, springs shocks and hardware for around 800. I know ill need brake lines but what about steering? Can I go with a dropped arm until I can afford crossover? Any tips?

Like said this truck probably wont get driven much, just cruised around town and to the lake.

Re: 84 k10 GMC swb, "Big Red"

Well today I picked up a few rattle cans and decided id get artistic with the interior, this is what I came up with.

Black trim, red metal. I think it goes together nice. I had an ugly brown dash laying around that had some minor cracks around the speakers. After paint I think it came out nice

Re: 84 k10 GMC swb, "Big Red"

Well guys the progress on this truck got slow, I started college and lost interest in it for awhile, i also had to sell the 38s because I needed the cash..

But, as luck would have it I found a decent set of 36x13 super swamper iroks mounted on some 15x10 6 lug black wheels, for 150$!!!!

after I got those I realized my dreams of a 12 inch lift were a little far out there, all the small parts were gonna nickel and dime me to death.

So after some deliberation I decided to go with a 6 inch for now, and if I dont like it i'll trade it out later on. I think its gonna look sweet!

Got the rough country 6 inch kit with rear blocks (im cheap) for 439$ brand new. Right now im losing the battle getting the factory steering arm off. any ideas?

I think you need a puller for that.

Big F'n hammer. You have to shock it to get all three studs to let go. There are tapered cone washers in there. It's like taking 3 small tie rod ends off at the same time. Sometimes you can use an air chisel with a punch end at each tapered area. If you don't have an air chisel maybe try a punch and hammer.
They don't fall right off. Suck actually.

Re: 84 k10 GMC swb, "Big Red"

Ive started welding the nuts to the stud, then backing the stud out with an impact. Then using allen headed bolts with a new cone waster. Gonna make next time way easier.

Re: 84 k10 GMC swb, "Big Red"

I got it out! Used brake fluid and aero-kroil, a 4 pound sledgee and some cuss words. I beat the arm down and they eventually popped out, then I pulled them out by hand

Re: 84 k10 GMC swb, "Big Red"

Got new parts!

6 inch rough country, new springs, blocks, add-a-leaf, shocks, steering arm, etc for 474$ out the door.

Im going to install it on thursday. I hope to have it lifted at the end of the day. it will still need finishing up but I want to get all the big stuff done.

Any suggestions for brake lines on the front? I like cheap. Its just a mud truck.

Spend the extra dollars on the braided brake lines especially if you intend to drive it off-road. It's cheap insurance. Never skimp on the brakes.
