Turn signal switch routing help

Hi Everyone,
I'm trying to put a new turn signal switch in my 71 Blazer with non-tilt column (the previous owner removed the switch for some reason). I picked up a replacement switch but can't figure out how to route in through the housing without crimping the wires. It appears that the back side of the housing has an area cut out for the wires to run through (on the left) but the switch has the wires coming out on the right side. In order to feed the wires through the opening I have to route them under the switch which crimps them and prevents the switch from being secured down into the housing completely. What am I missing here?
