1965 Fastback GT

Just had this dropped off. It has been sitting inside a shed for 15+ years. They just want me to get it running and road worthy.

Any pointers welcome.

I will replace fluids in the engine including fuel.
Prime oil pump
Check dist cap
Install new battery

Once running change tranny (4 spd) and rearend dope

Check break lines and replace fluid. The left rear wheel is locked up.

Re: 1965 Fastback GT

That's going to be a nice Mustang. Looks like your on the right track. The brake shoes are probably rusted to the drum. You need to use a BFH and smack the drum to break loose the rust. You'll have to clean out the carb also. I'm sure it's all lacquered up and clogged. Give it a good tune up. Make sure you flush all the brake fluid out and get rid of the moister. You might even have leaky wheel cylinders after you bleed the brakes. Have fun!!

I like the fast backs, but not the notch backs. I'm also working on a 66 Mustang right now.

Carb rebuild maybe. Check brake shoes too, may have discs in front. Those GT wheels are not 65-66, but no big deal. I have a 65 Fastback out back, rusty donor when I get around to it.

My favorite year and body style of Mustang. I have a friend that did a restore on one. Every single nut bolt ... everything. Its better than new, probably over restored. Bright red. I drool over that thing every time I see it. The green on the one you have is my second favorite color for that car.

Re: 1965 Fastback GT

And if you go thru the work to get the carb and fuel pump in good working order, make sure to check/clean the gas tank and check all lines going to it. A friend of mine just got a 66 Comet running after sitting for ever, and it stalls after driving it, when it is warm outside, but walk away, come back in awhile, it is cooled down,, starts right up and drives away. We have narrowed it down to stuff in the tank clogging the pickup tube screen and possibly a leaky hose on top of the gas tank.

Thanks Dennis, and yes the shoes were rusted to the drum. I tried the hammer trick. I didn't have my slide hammer at home but used my "POGO" stick to work it off. I told him the brake lines are probably brittle. It needs a complete brake overhaul.

You are correct about the wheels. The owner says everything is original except the wheels. He said they came off a Torino.

Sounds like a nice one.

Ipopped the cap off the fuel tank and it doesn't smell like gas. I will advise him what needs to be done, it's up to him since it is his money. I sat down tonight and made a list of items needed. I'm sure once I try to break the wheel cyl. loose the lines will just twist off.

Re: 1965 Fastback GT

Talked to the owner today and instructed him that the brake system may need a complete overhaul. I'm sure once I get into it this will hold true. I'm prepping him for the worst case senerio. There is no reason to get it running if he can't drive it. He wants an estimate for parts and labor. Is there a preferred supplier of mustang parts?

Do ya'll have an idea of labor for replacing the complete system?

I have sent him a link to this thread so he can keep up with progress.

Thanks

Re: 1965 Fastback GT

If your going to get into the brake system, I would convert it to disc/drum, power brakes. I've used these guys before.

OR

But I get better deals from these guy's, I'm also a dealer for MB Brakes, and MBM Brakes. MBM Brakes have better prices though.

Re: 1965 Fastback GT

As far as labor to install disc brake conversion, installing the power brake conversion, replacing the rear shoes, and wheel cylinders. I don't know. Probably 10 to 12 hours. For me it would be $600 at $50 per hr. And that's without replacing all the brake lines and hoses. Which you might need. You can spend 2 to 3 or more days for the complete job. That is if everything goes your way.

That thing's a pile! Fortunately, I happen to be able to take it off the owner's hands and save him a lot of trouble.

Nice fastback.

Nice fastback.

He gave me the go ahead to get it running first.

I changed the oil/filter. The magnetic drain plug was pretty sludged, but nothing major as far as metal goes.

The oil pan has seen it's better days.

I pulled all the plugs and spun the engine over by hand. It spins freely. Then I tried to turn it over with my jumpbox and the solenoid just clicked. It might be the jump box. I touched the hot wire with the jump box and nothing.

Thanks for tuning in.

Pulled the starter and cables out. I called and ordered all the battery cables and I got 2 and the ones I got don't even fit. Taking them to match up and dropping the starter off at the rebuilder. I did bench check the starter and nothing.

Also got a new battery.
