Anyone ever...?

Set-up a Mallory Dual Point distributor? Got one and figure I might as well put it to use. Let's say for cultural enrichment purposes...LOL! Nice piece and looks brand new!

They work great if you can get the points properly adjusted.

I'm always good for a go at it...anyone have any instructions on how to adjust them?

Mallory Dual Point

Funny, I just put one in two weeks ago. My 350s tired and the points definately needed changing on the stock distrib. I had a practically brand new Mallory tacked in the garage and desided to slap it in. I no longer had the instructions for the point gap so set them both a .025" and put her in. Truck runs better than new....well, not exactly, but alot better than before....

jwhitfield, I have not welcomed you to the board...but WELCOME from Seattle, WA! Thanks...so I just set them both at .025 and run and gun? What is the principal behind this thing? It looks like the two sets are about 22.5 degrees out of phase? Is that correct?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hey, I appreciate the welcome!! I'm actually embarrassed to say that after all these years of playing with engines, I have forgotten the theory behind the dual point design. I need to pull out my old ignition books and look at a schematic of the system. All I remember is that the two sets split the ware and work better at higher rpm. Maybe one of the electronic experts out there will reply...

Jwhitfield, Got the both set at .025 on the bench. It looks like they are both in parallel and closer than the 22.5 degrees. Is the principal that they give a second spark to the cylinder slightly after the initial spark for more complete compbustion? At least this seems like the idea? Hey what can it hurt...this thing looks like it is almost new!

Start her up.

If you get it in and start her up, let me know how she runs. BTW, I wondered how you knew to welcome me on board, then I remembered your BB shows the number of postings. I looked around the board and some of you all must have been posting to this board while these trucks were rolling off the assembly line. It'll take me years to move up in the ranks... What's the next level and how many postings will I need to get there?? see ya..

I think that is the concept. They are only about 5 degrees apart so that means at 35 degrees total advance you are getting an initial spark and a second spark at 30 degrees. What a concept! I guess the old motors with smaller coils and less energy and the possibility of points floating at high rpm...having a second set of points and capacitor in there couldn't hurt!

Now I have to get my antique Mallory Promaster coil working. I need the primary wire connector. I may just make one since Jegs and Summit claim they have been discontinued! I called the number for Mallory today and was told Mr. Gasket was taking the day off...what was that all about?

if i remember right the point gap should be about .017 or if using a dwell meter the dwell accross an individual set of points should be between 27-32degrees and the total dwell accross both sets should be 37-42 degrees. ever hear of GOOD FRIDAY???

It's been years since I set one up.Let's just say " I haven't set one up since I delivered the tablets to Moses".
I f I remember correctly the two sets of points were set up so the charge in the capacitor built up higher.I think it was either longer dwell or maybe longer spark.I can't remember much about them either. Must be the CRS disease.
I do remember setting it up on the dist machine in high school auto shop. The instructor kept it for a few days to show how to change advance and other stuff.

Okay...so I will readjust them...and see how that goes. I can set the dwell once I get it running as long as I remember to adjust them both...that must be the key is to have the gap and the dwell the same on both of them and still maintain the overlap. This will be fun.

I have just never seen so many businesses closed on Good Friday...must be a sign of the times.
