on the column shifter for a T350

My truck came with a powerglide trans with the shifter on the column. The P.O. installed a T350. Is there a way to modify the steering column so that I don't have to guess which gear I am in?

I dont think so, the powerglyde was the only automatic available for that year ( I know there was another but it was alot different and I cant remember the sequence)

The first (4) positions are identical on any column shifter from left to right (PRND....) so you will not go wrong up to that point.
After that you are only out 1 gear in appearance: 2, 1 vs. L (1). In other words your low gear will simply be one invisible notch down to the right.
That said, the heavier duty 3/4 ton trucks could be ordered with a 3 speed auto in place of the powerglide/2 speed auto column...so if you see one of those columns maybe that would work for you.
Good Luck

Couldn't you get an indicator from a later model truck or get a new indicator?

You can get an acrylic one from column makers but they're high and not too appealing, the 67-72 are wide columns than 60-66, so I really don't know what to tell you

Re: on the column shifter for a T350

Is there a different column that could be swapped out that has the indicator? I "think" mine was column shift at one point but now it is floor shift. I want to swap it back to column but not wanting to pay the ididit prices to just have a shifter on the column. (I will eventually have a 4L60E) but for now a T400

Re: on the column shifter for a T350

Some Chevy/GMC van columns, up to about the early '80's are a very similiar column, and have no key in them. One thing to condsider when using a 2 spd column with a 3 spd tran, sometimes the detents or "stops" in the column are not the same spacing as the trans, and can actually keep the shifter lever on the trans from being properly positioned.

I do not have a gear indicator on my 700r4 transmission, I just put it into gear and drive it, there is no guessing you do not look at that indicator anyway..................JMO
