Cinder Block Garage

First off if you have a cinder block garage post some pictures.

I have an issue with my garage. First off it was built for model A's I think.

The second problem is that even though I installed a barrel stove the thing hemorrhages heat like I can't keep the dang thing warm in the winter, thus making it damn near impossible to work in...comfortably anyway. How have you guys insulated your garage or improved upon it? I'm also looking to take out my 3ft deep work bench for something that hinges from the wall so I can drop it down and get more room when I'm not working on a project. with the bench up my C10 sticks out the door about 2.5 ft.

My next question is has anyone converted an old 2 door garage into a large single door? The bays are small and it would be nice at times to be able to pull in at a bit of an angle to work on the truck and still be able to get the door shut. I'll try and get some pictures of my shed by this weekend. By the time I get home it's dark so pictures after work are out of the question.

I dont have a cider block garage but I can relate to the model A sized garage.
My previous home had one of those. My next shed will be bigger.

Since its block I would think you will have many options on adding insulation.
I'd think you could add sheet foam on the out side and reside it over some furring strips.

Is there a full width beam across the garage opening now?

Looking forward to pictures!

There isn't a beam I would trust too much, I was thinking about buying a used I-beam and tying it in.

I attempted to build a 30x36 a year back but the bank said that my property would be worth too much. But that's another story entirely. I just had a kid so I need to go the cheaper route on insulating it vs residing it. Plus I just painted it a year and a half ago lol. That was a pain in arse. I was wondering if anyone has put in 2x4's wide side against the wall then put the styrofoam insulation on the wall and covered it with plywood? I'm thinking that's what I'm going to have to do.

Re: Cinder Block Garage

ok now I'm just getting stupid with this thing lolI'm over doing it as I usually do.

Here is a picture of the middle of my sketch-up

The nerd part of me wants to implant a set of electric shocks or pneumatic shocks to open and shut the door on my storage area. It would be even better if all I had to do was wave my hand in front of a sensor.

Re: Cinder Block Garage

Looking good, if you want more R-Value you can put 2x4 furring and have Spray Foam shot between the studs. Much better R-Value but more $ as well

I'm going way too far lol.

I plan on laying 2x4's and maybe even 2x6's on their side and putting in the styro insulation I think.

Re: Cinder Block Garage

Don't forget, look up. Most of your heat loss is through the roof.
Worked in a garage that was insulated well and had a wood stove for heat. If the garage was cold when I went in, it would take the stove hours to get it above freezing. A 150,000 btu propane heater for a half hour helped immensely. (iirc garage was 25x50, insulated, sheetrocked.)

Re: Cinder Block Garage

I'm closing the roof off. It has a center storage area but other than that it's open so It's not working out so well.

Everyone will see what I'm working with this weekend when I'm home and it's light out.

Re: Cinder Block Garage

I would consider this as an option http://www.core-fill500.com/ You can easily fill from the inside and all you need is about a 1/2" hole into the block on top. I had my basement quoted and it was about $500. Not a bad deal considering there is no work on your part and the insulation will never be seen.

donut is right though, it will take a long time for a wood stove to heat up even a 2 car garage. I bought a scratch and dent 100k btu furnace for $300 in my last shop and it worked great. just an option.

Re: Cinder Block Garage

Your walls are more than likely still hollow, easiest would be to fur it out and styro foam it then panel/sheetrock.They make a styro foam pellet insul. for brick walls you por it in the cavity's , might be kinda hard with the roof on

Re: Cinder Block Garage

Paint the inside and outside with nansulate. It's fairly cheap for what it is. http://nansulate.com/homeprotect.htm I haven't done it yet, but I am going to paint the inside of my house with this product to keep my heating bills down.
My uncle uses this product, on the pools he installs. it keeps the water warmer for longer so the heaters aren't having to run constantly.

Re: Cinder Block Garage

I'd still start with the roof. Sheetrock will go a long way, insulation will be better. If still to cold, and funds permit, many of the suggestions you've gotten will work.

Also check the seals on the doors, some I've seen have an inch gap when they are closed.

1 wide garage door can be done, but not cheaply. Full span lintel and wide door, plus supporting the roof while your doing it can add up fast.

Re: Cinder Block Garage

After seeing the pic, I would definitely look into somehow insulated the ceiling. Keep in mind heat goes up. so if you can stop it some what. it'll make a big difference. Put some sheetrock, or osb after you insulate it paint with the nansulate I'd mentioned earlier. You'd be good to go.

Re: Cinder Block Garage

I agree with the insulating suggestions. Then instead of the design you have.Build the wall shelving with a drop down door that makes a bench.Hinge a couple of legs to it that support it when folded down. You get the doors on your storage and a bench with one used solid door.
Converting to a single wide door is probably going to be cost/engineering prohibitive in the case of your garage style.construction materials.

Re: Cinder Block Garage

drill 7/16" holes in block if you know it's blocks are three hole, 3 holes to drill if 2 hole blocks drill 2 holes.. then have a spray in foam outfit. come in and spray in the holes.
instead of taking 3-4" of space from all sides of the inside of your garage ,

Re: Cinder Block Garage

Its all in the ceiling. I would floor it in and make a storage loft. You will immediately feel the difference even without insulation as the heat will be held from escaping upward. I built my moms house with cinder block but insulated it with foam inside the block(obviously before the roof went on).

Re: Cinder Block Garage

Would I just need to replace everything above my reclaimer with double or tripple wall when i put a ceiling over the barrel stove? Or would it be better to use something like cement board? I was going to try and put some foam in the roof line this last weekend and maybe start closing off the upper area but the wife had to work 12hr shifts Saturday and Sunday so I was stuck on diaper duty. There's about 7 inches on the ground here right now and it's still snowing so you probably won't catch me in the garage right now lol.

Re: Cinder Block Garage

Wuss (j/k). There's not 7" in the garage. What I'd do is sheetrock, leave an area around the chimney (check local codes, iirc I did the one in my house at 6" clear, check codes, yours more than likely will be different.)

On the wall behind my wood stove, I used a sheet of stainless steel screwed to strapping on top of the sheetrock. SS actually was off of the wall 3/4" and provided a good barrier against the heat and you have air movement behind the steel. To cover the opening around the chimney, I used alum flashing cut to fit. I had the flashing already.
